I just finished readiing the Mystery Knight and i enjoyed the parallels to ASOIAF.

***Spoiler Alert***

I think Egg is growing up fast but at the same time shows signs of his young age. Dunk appears to slowly developing into a (Hedge) Knight, but is being surrounded by supporters and people who despise him. I'm looking forward to the next novella if there is one to come.

Any thoughts on the novel...

Re: The Mystery Knight

Gaaaahhhhh! I've got Legends and Warriors, but I've not yet got a copy of Legends II... and I need to read The Sworn Sword before I read The Mystery Knight.

Re: The Mystery Knight

"The Sworn Sword" is probably still my favorite, but I enjoyed this. Mostly, I enjoyed The Late Lord Frey's appearance as a snot nosed brat, haha

A bit of a spoiler but,

How the hell did Daemon Blackfyre ever get it into his head that this paltry amount of men would be enough to succesfully win a rebbelion.

Okay, so there was that dream about that dragon, and a living dragon would have made a difference, but still, it's not like that dragon hatched already....

That bothers me as well... There was talk about all swords of Lord Frey and all the money of Butterwell, then some quick victory and Brackens join them, then the rest etc. but it all fails on one thing: All those great lords didn't come with armies. They came with escorts, which was 30 people each at the most. Yeah, one dragon would make a difference.

On the other, completely unrelated matter Daemon Blackfyre, AKA Daemon The Second Pretender AKA John The Fiddler AKA The Brown Dragon is totally, undeniably gay and Allyn Cockshaw is his lover. And Daemon tries to get Dunk to sleep with him through out the whole novella.

There, I said it.

Re: The Mystery Knight

He certainly does like Dunk. Is it right that he may be a relation to Brienne? He kind of acts like her.

With all the characters that GRRM invents I noticed Lord Gorman Peake of Starpike.
Do you suppose that it is an homage to Mervyn Peake (a fantasy writer), who wrote the Gormenghast books, who had a main character named Steerpike?

My reply to "He likes Dunk" is here. Don't read the link if you haven't read Mystery knight yet! We could really use spoiler tag on this forum!

And yes, she had seen his shield in old room in her father's castle, so, yeah, they could be related.

Could be, I have never read those...

Re: The Mystery Knight

I do agree with you, Stormlord! Good link.

I can somtimes have a problem when I employ Canadian understatement without a ;) or something! I didn't grow up using emoticons.

Re: The Mystery Knight

Stop the presses!

Ha! There is another Lord Peake of Starpike. His name was Titus. That is one of the other main characters in the Gormenghast books. The Wiki says Titus Peake married Margot Lannister. So, it really is a little GRRM plant.

Now we can rest. lol

The first two Gormenghast books are fabulous, if you like lots of gothic/fantastic atmospheric description and creepy characters. They are similar to GRRM's in that you may change in your feelings towards them. There is a lot of complex metaphor in the books, as well. Occasionally, Peake uses difficult words. The books have a lot in common with ASOIAF, but don't have as much action, or cliff hangers. When I read them a long time ago, I recall that the books made me both laugh out loud and tear up.

Re: The Mystery Knight

No problem, Stormlord. I liked the "5 Scientific Reasons..."

I can especially relate to not being clear on message boards and e-mail, attempts at humour being risky and being frustrated by constantly updated electronics. Now I also have a TV and a phone with intricate systems that I can barely use! It used to be a no brainer.

If the Mystery Knight were a TV show, I think the interaction between Daemon and Dunk would be even easier to process. I wonder how they will handle Renly/Loras in the HBO series?

Re: The Mystery Knight

I finally got around to reading this novella just recently. The Hedge Knight is still my favourite of the three, but The Mystery Knight was still rather good, and all the better for being the onlybit of new Martin we've gotten for many long years.

I love the history that is being delved in to in these novellas - they really make me want for a novel or two set in this period, surrounding the Blackfyre Rebellion and its aftermath. I do find at times it an be confusing though, trying to keep track of who is who, especially with the excess of nicknames we are exposed to - Bloodraven, Bittersteel, Fireball, and so on. It'd be good to finally get that aSoIaF encyclodpedia that has been on the boil to have at hand for reference.

I really liked the character of Ser Glendon Ball by the end of the story. I'dlike to see him pop up in future stories. I can see him as the kind of knight Dunk would want in his Kingsguard. Incidentally, I really do hope these novellas carry through that far. I wonder if they'll get to the Wall in the next one...

On Daemon batting for the home team - well, yeah. Not like it was subtle or anything.

And regarding Lord Peake - Lord Jordayne of the Tor is supposedly named for Robert Jordan (who is published by Tor), so I'm guessing that this is definitely more than a coincidence...

Re: The Mystery Knight

Here's a few thoughts, after reread.

Spoilers

Maynard Plumm is Bloodraven! And Bloodraven is Faceless Man!

(It is in white up there.)
I just finished reading TMK last night.

I liked the story a lot

I'd love to hear more about this theory YS.

And i must admit, all of The Fiddler's "references" went right over my head. Thick as a castle wall.

Just reread The Mystery Knight for the fourth time, I think. And I have a few thoughts.

First, the story details more of the Blackfyre rebellion and Bloodraven’s part in it. *******, born, not base born. A sorcerer. He is the kings hand and he dispenses the king’s justice at the end.

How many eyes does blood Raven have? A thousand and one. Ser Maynard Plumm is obviously one of these eyes. Duncan thinks he’s a gossip, but he’s the one who has the best assessment of what is actually happening. I think he’s the only character who’s brooch is described other than Lord Rivers himself. Plums brooch is a moon stone. Rivers’ is an iron hand. When Duncan escapes the trap at the well, he meets Plumm who binds up his wound and sends him off to the sept. During this time, Plumm’s features seem ill defined or slightly fluid to Dunk. This can be ascribed to Dunk’s injur or to the fact that it may be Rivers using a glamour to appear as Plumm in the moonstone brooch. In fact, when Dunk first sees him, he thinks he only has one pale eye. A thousand eyes and one.

When Plumm is introduced, he is sitting among the stumps of Weirwoods. The white stumps and white roots surround him. And he soon comments that maybe they are all bastards of a Targaryen King.

Secondly, Walder Frey is introduced as a four year old boy. And he is associated with a hastily concluded marriage contract and a travesty of a wedding.

Third, there is a lot of talk about the dreams of these descendants of Valyria. Dunk already encountered one prince with this gift of true dreams. He now encounters another. Duncan is prophesied to gain a white cloak. He thinks this is unlikely and compares it to a great many other unlikely things. A white cloak for Glendon Ball. His being born of royalty.

The fiddler has other dreams as well. The most prominent of these is a dragon being born at Whitewalls. At the end of the story, Lord Rivers says this actually indicated Egg. Lord Rivers states his intent to raze Whitewalls. So how can the dream come true if the Casler has been destroyed?

Up on the roof, the Fiddler tells Dunk that the castle looks like snow. I think it is easy to compare the names, Whitewalls and Winterfell. Whitewalls in the moonlight may look very much like Winterfelll in snow. This points back to the theory of adragon rising from Winterfell.

Lastly, Dunk and Egg are very similar to Brienne and Pod.
