Late 80's or early 90's fantasy novel where a group of American and Japanese soldiers are transported from a World War 2 battle to an alternate universe where they learn to fly and do other magic. Some are recruited to fight for good and some for evil.

For the record I threw in the towel on this series quite some time ago (probably a dozen plus years at least) but once again have had my interest peaked again by re reading Rally Cry. This series was one of the few series that I have been able to come back to fill in as a mindless read, but...
