I think Oliver did that to me. It's just such a cool thing to be able to do, I wish I could do it.. Not that I would steal anything mind you, purely for prank purposes of course....

I'd most likely go into cat burgling or something nice and impersonal- all of those choices are too likely to lead to rather overpersonal violence. Or something tecnological, like remilling gold coins.

I just found this thread. I voted for rogue, but only because they seem to have some of the best parts in Eddings' books. With a couple of exceptions, Eddings' thieves seem to be the best characters in his books.

define Rogue for me please. It seems a rather broad term.
Personally I'd go with cat burglar or pickpocket otherwise.

I always saw the rogue category as somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades kind of thief -one who doesn't specialize in any 'art'. When I first read the Elenium, I saw Stragen as an 'Elegant rogue', being involved in all things unscrupulous but being witty and urbane at the same time. I guess I'd include Silk or Althalus in the rogue category, too.

Fair enough. My question regarding Rogues is that the term generally incorporates all members of the stealthy arts. And any pickpocket, burglar, brigand, spy, mugger, cutpurse, et al, fell into this category. Perhaps i think that as in DnD, a Rogue is all these things or specialised in one or several of the roguish arts.

I don't think a jack-of-all trades applies to Silk, and by default, his carbon copies in the various other series. He is a Master Spy, a Master Actor/Infiltrator, a Master Merchant, a Master Pickpocket, a Master Cat Burglar, A Master Assassin, and even a Master Acrobat. Jack-of-all-Trades means he is master of none. Silk is Many things. Rogue is the only title capable of categorizing him, true, but he is so much more than a simple Rogue. He is Silk and that is a classification all his own.
As much as i like Stragen, he does not qualify as a Silk... largely in part because Silk is divided into three - at least - characters in the Elenium/Tamuli - Talen, Stragen and Platime.

Yeah, the film of Oliver has always been a favourite of mine, just cause I love the idea of theives guilds, and the Artful Dodger is my hero! Hence Talen being one of my favourite Eddings characters.

I had to pick rouge. For me the Tamuli was very interesting when they went into the lives of all those different thieves when they started doing the 'random murders'. Bersa's Reef was chilling.
