FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY publisher SOLARIS announces FIRST signings

BL Publishing is very pleased to announce the first three signings to its brand new science fiction and fantasy imprint, Solaris.

ASHOK BANKER IRON GODS
Acclaimed author of the highly successful Ramayana series, ASHOK BANKER presents a galaxy-spanning spectacle of classic science fiction. Iron Gods is wrought on a truly epic scale, an adventure-filled, high concept space opera deep in the vein of Greg Bear’s Forge of God and Peter F Hamilton’s The Reality Dysfunction.

This powerful new novel examines the consequences of first contact with alien beings and the fallout that occurs when they alter the course of the human race forever. Infused with an Indian aesthetic, but drawing deeply on Western sensibilities too, this is science fiction with a truly global – and universal – perspective.

Praise for Ashok Banker
"A cracking good yarn... Bask in the warm waters of one of the sources of world mythology, made more accessible to the modern, Western reader by Banker's excellent narrative interpretation... In a word, Wow!"
The Alien Online

JEFFREY THOMAS – DEADSTOCK
Highly regarded short story writer JEFFREY THOMAS pens a gritty SF detective thriller set amongst the dirty streets of his famed setting, the city of Punktown. Deadstock is ultra-noir science fiction at its very best – raw, edgy and dark. Adding a modern twist to the cyberpunk genre, it follows Private Detective Jeremy Stake as he hunts living genetic experiments through a bleak dystopian future, all the while doing battle with his own personal demons and trying to stay one step ahead of his sinister employer.

This bold new novel will appeal to fans of Richard Morgan’s Altered Carbon, William Gibson’s Neuromancer and George Alec Effinger’s When Gravity Fails.

Praise for Jeffrey Thomas and Punktown
"Punktown is searing and alien and anxious and rich, and it is humane, and it is moving. Jeffrey Thomas has done something wonderful."
China Mieville

NATASHA RHODES – DANTE’S GIRL
Fresh from the novelization of the smash hit Blade: Trinity movie, rock music photographer NATASHA RHODES has written a contemporary vampire novel set amidst the glamour and corruption of LA. Dark and sexy, this is modern fantasy with a cosmopolitan twist that will appeal to all fans of supernatural literature, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sex and the City.

Dante’s Girl marks the beginning of a fantastic series of dark supernatural adventures in the vein of Laurel K Hamilton’s Anita Blake sequence or Kelley Armstrong’s Bitten.

Praise for Natasha Rhodes
"Taut and gripping, Natasha Rhodes’s prose is that precious thing: the stuff you just can’t put down…"
Dan Abnett

Solaris publisher Marc Gascoigne adds: "This is just the first of a wave of announcements of signings to our new imprint. As we suspected, the arrival of Solaris has revealed a large untapped pool of SF and Fantasy writing talent. We’re especially gratified to welcome Ashok Banker; although known for his rich epic fantasies, his move to hard SF is nothing short of spectacular and we’re very pleased to offer a home for his new direction. Stay tuned for plenty more announcements soon!"

IRON GODS, DEADSTOCK and DANTE’S GIRL will be published by SOLARIS in spring 2007, for simultaneous release in the UK and USA. All deals were concluded by Solaris commissioning editors Christian Dunn and Mark Newton.

Do you know with the new punktown novel will it be avaiable in the UK? or will I have to track it down online which isn't so much hassle really I just like going to book shops more

This sounds interesting - although chronicles generally frowns on being used to publish press-releases, I really like the idea of hooking up with small print publishers - will have to chase up some information on Solaris for the future.

Sorry about that, Brian -- actually I fretted about that possibility after I'd posted. Won't do it again. (Actually, Solaris isn't a small publisher -- they're an imprint of BL Publishing.)

Already contacted them as I had to make it known I'm interested in the Jeffrey Thomas work! :D

In what way do you mean "hooking up" Brian?..

Jay, I saw your "I have to have the Jeffrey Thomas book!" comment on Jeff VanderMeer's blog entry about Solaris. :)

Thanks, Brian. The next tea is on me. In fact, tea for everybody!

Indeed! That was basically the same message I sent Solaris a couple of days ago :) and the reply was satisfactory - I look forward to getting my hands on a copy. I pimped it at my blog as well, and new material will allow me to repimp your already published work as well which deserves to be spoken of some more.

There are like 3 books that I had read back-to-back some time ago that I never get tired of shoving down people's throats and that is your Punktown, Cisco's Divinity Student, and Mamatas' Move Underground. A glorious week of reading.

Thanks, Jay. Word of mouth has helped me a lot.

I loved DIVINITY STUDENT, and also enjoyed Cisco's THE TYRANT and SAN VENEFICIO CANON (which includes DIVINITY STUDENT and its sequel THE GOLEM), too. I've been meaning to read Mamatas' MOVE UNDERGROUND.

SaN VENEFICIO CANON (which includes DIVINITY STUDENT

That was the first copy I bought, later I went ahead and bought the Divinity Student seperately (I believe tha's a Buzz City Press publication).
