Small Spoilers

I saw something of some interest. Look at these comparisons.

With Arya.

"I do. My time is done." Jaqen passed a hand down his face from forehead to chin, and where it went he changed. His cheeks grew fuller, his eyes closer; his nose hooked, a scar appeared on his right cheek where no scar had been before. And when he shook his head, his long straight hair, half red an half white, dissolved away to reveal a cap of tight black curls."

Pate asking to see the alchemist's face in AFFC:

"He was just a man, and his face was just a face. A young man's face, ordinary, with full cheeks and the shadow of a beard. A scar showed faintly on his right cheek. He had a hooked nose, and a mat of dense black hair that curled tightly around his ears. It was not a face he recognized."

Yup, well spotted dude. I missed that first time i read AFFC, but the general consensus around here is that the faceless man whose whacked pate is Jaqen.

Well, a lot's been made out of the oldtown being the centre of learning in westeros, and the order of measter's as harbouring many ancient secret's etc. In AFFC we saw clues that the order has at least one secret faction within it, operating outside the dictate's of the ruling council.

I've mentioned before my suspicion's about vary's motive's for serving the targaryen's, and apparently striving greatly to de-stabalise westeros in the wake of aery's death. The only conclusion i came to that made much sense to me was that there must be some kind of secret society in the free cities and beyond (which are much older, and more learned then the "barbaric" nation's of westeros) that knows of the other's, and the threat they pose, as well as the prophecy of the prince who was promised (thus vary's seemingly limitless devotion to what was, in his time, a corrupt and cruel dynasty). I don't know whether the faceless men are part of, or affiliated with this society, or merely working for them, but if i were trying to find out information on combating the other's, id certainly try and infiltrate the order of measter's.

Interesting theory about the Faceless Men but GRRM does not really even hint about some secret society à la Illuminati in any of his books. Should we get a Varys POV or should Varys show up in either Tyrion's or Dany's POV, we may get a few answers (and probably more questions) as to his motives, intentions and what webs he's actually weaved. Some of it is fairly subjective and I do not doubt that Varys is dedicated to the Targaryen cause, how far he's actually gone is still to be determined. The role of the Faceless Men will hopefully be better explained after ADWD (or maybe we'll get a hint in the promised Arya POV). But a secret society working backstage? I'm don't see it yet. But, DE, you may be onto something.

it's all conjecture ATM. But every time I re-read the book's I keep asking my self "Vary's, why?" I just cant buy the whole explanation that vary's was a nobody from the free cities who was taken in by Aery's and raised to high office and was so grateful that despite the fact the guy was an insane lunatic and dreadful king he still remains loyal to the dynasty. It can't be because of money, because prior to the birth of her dragon's (something I DON'T think illyrio/vary's could have predicted. It's just too far fetched) the whole "put visery's" on the throne plan was so unfeasible that I can't see Vary's putting his support behind such an unlikely venture. The only possible explanation for risking himself in something so potentially suicidal being fanatical devotion to a cause. I just don't accept that that cause could possibly be the perpetuation of the targaryen line, purely because of his loyalty for aery's. There has to more to it, and the best fit would be that vary's knew something of the prophecy. Which begs the question, how? I favour the secret society option, but either way: Vary's KNOWS. Somehow.

I think.

Have you considered that perhaps the Faceless Men are this "secret society" and that they have a higher agenda. Could Varys himself be a Faceless Man. Or at least a spy for them. Will he turn up at the House of Black and White where Arya has just gone blind?

Also, I thought that Illyrio/Varys set up Dany to marry Kal Drogo and thus getting an army. They also knew how volatile Viserys was and took quite a gamble putting him in with Kal and his Bloodriders, unless they knew of the prophecy and interpreted it correctly by recognixing Dany as is fulfillment. Viserys wouldn't last and would get himself killed eventually.

all because he is "too much of his father's son"-ser barristan selmy (i love that guy)

all the charecters have their little secrets and when you just skim through the books you miss all of the signs...like that pate one for instance

and on another note... the faceless men are assassains therefore jaqen could be on a mission to gain information and do away with a certain person in the citadel...with GM the master of plot twists that wouldnt be much of a surprise

I think Varys is more likely to be in league with the Maesters of Oldtown than with my brothers. Marywyn said they were v. anti-magic, and so is Varys. Although having said that, the story of how he was cut could be a bare-faced lie, and besides, he doesn't seem to mind the dragons. Also, the way he changes his appearance is sort of Jarqen like... maybe he is an FM. good call TK.

Silly theory:

We know that Jaqen and his society worship gods who are all aspects of death; we know that Mersinde has made claim that "there are only two gods, one of light and life, one of darkness and death." and that the Others are clearly on the 'death' side of the equation. Corrupt and crazed though she is, perhaps she is on to something; and the faceless men know it. Perhaps their attempts to stop the prophecy comes less from a desire to see Dany regain the throne as it is that they desire the Others- unliving, cold, monsters of shadow in truth- to claim their ascendancy.
