Just finished reading this book

(it was nominated in this reading group thing I'm on)

I hadn't read a George R.R. Martin book before so I had no preconceptions.

Firstly - I did enjoy the novel!

I really didn't know what to make of the protagonist Haviland Tuf. I never come across a character that you couldn't really dislike or like. I veered towards like most of the time because of the cats but I kept getting irritated at his comments about not being trusted - when I wasn't sure *I* would trust him. Truthfully I was convinced he was going to turn out to be some kind of android. I don't know how many times he was described as "emotionless"

I guess Martin is pro contraception then eh? ;)

I quite liked the stories, but I found Tuf himself to be increasingly annoying as the stories went on. I did sympathise with the characters' exasperation as they tried to reason with him at various points. Admittedly, Tuf's basic beliefs usually have some justification, even if I don't necessarily agree with them. Pragmatically, what he did at the end of the last story makes a lot of sense, I still believe it is the wrong thing to do, though.

I would personally rank Tuf Voyaging as one of my less favourite Martin books, although that doesn't mean the writing isn't as good as usual, I just personally didn't like it quite as much.

well Tuf excluded I did enjoy the story and I've just got A game of thrones to read :)

A Game Of Thrones is an excellent book, and the series it probably my favourite series of books. Have fun :)
