Heh, I was quietly rooting for Great Expectations - but I knew it wouldn't win.

Ironically, I am pretty sure that LOTR's could never be published by a non best-selling author this days - the narrative style is just too "uncommerical".

Survivor made some very astute comments on that some while back - I'll see if I can dig up his comments later.

No surprises then. Certainly LOTR is a fine book and deserves to be 'up there'.
But, I can't help wondering how it would have faired if the films hadn't been made.

What - do you mean in the days when the book was only for nerds and freaks? :D
LOL You should have seen the number and quality of beards on display when I went to see the first cinematic attempt at LOTR (circa 1978)

It was an animated version starring the voice of John Hurt as Strider. It had a quite unique technique for the battle scenes - they filmed real actors fighting and then used a wash of colour (mainly red) to help it blend in with the animation. I really liked this version but, unfortunately, it ends with Gandal arriving at Helms Deep. There was an intention to make a second part but the money was not forthcoming (which is why Peter Jackson insisted on making all 3 at the same time - to ensure that this did not happen again).

It's available on DVD and, all said and done, a fine addition to any collection.

Well - you learn something new everyday! I've seen the animated version of The Hobbit but hadn't heard about an animated version of the later books. Sounds interesting.

It is actually a pretty good movie - the animation is very different from what we see today though. This movie is what made me a Smaug fan. I can't really understand why but there you go. I wanted to name the dog Smaug! How it (the dog) ended up as Winston Churchill I'll never know...

Never heard of the Hobbit animation either!

The LOTR animated film is a classic, though. Sometimes the filming is a bit dodgy, but they keep something of the characters that the new films have actually lost.

For example, when trying to get into Moria and observing Gandalf's continual failure, Gimli makes a sharp comment about how they should have brought Saruman instead. It's little character pieces like that that the new films have quite lost in many places.

Big Read

I love the fact that of the top five three were fantasy and one science fiction. That's one in the eye for the Atwoods of this world.

By the way, I think they found Bilbo Baggins in Iraq. They searched him for weapons of mass destruction, but ony found a ring.

LOL!

The animated "Hobbit" was great!! And best of all it has the hobbit song! You gotta love that song. Which reminds me of a pretty funny flash animation lotr spoof. It's great, check it out:

Just a little disclaimer so that no one is caught unawares, some of the banners at this site can be a bit shall we say, racy. It's a cool site though. :-D

HYeh, that was an extremely long-winded - but excellently animated Flash - and it did actually have it's moments. :)

I do have that album on tape, somewhere, btw. :D
