Can anyone help me find the name of this book please?

It's the story I once read when I was a child and I vaugely remembered it.
However, I still remember the impression it had on me and want to read it again.

It's about a guy who was put into a confined space with a small living organism. As it turned out, that thing was an alien and the guy had to fight it in the environment chosen to provide fairness to both of them.
The winner of this fight would get their race to win the war that had been going on between them.

That's all I can remember. I'm sorry if it's not enough. My knowledge about SF is very limited. Also, please do not mind my English as it's not my native language.

"Arena" by Fredric Brown. Frequently anthologized, so not difficult to find. It was also adapted for a Star Trek episode (the original series). Not only did they win the war, but the victor ensured his species survival. Good story.
