Has anyone read Fables? Thoughts. questions. comments. I really like the series soo far.

Yep, I've been following the series via the trade paperbacks. Good stuff, though I think it starts to stray off course a bit. I prefer finite series that have an ending in mind. At this point, I'm not sure if this is actually going anywhere.

Minor niggle, though. Really entertaining work that any fantasy fan would want to check out.

I have been reading Fables since it first came out .. it is a really fun series. I agree that there were a few times that it seemed to get off track (like 6 issues in a row without snow/bigby).

But overall, it is one of the more enjoyable books out there.

Have been buying them as they've been compiled into graphic novels and I like what I've read thus far. I'd agree that they seem to meander and go off track sometimes and I've been wondering if there's going to be a defnite end of itf it's going to keep going.

But all in all, it's one of the more enjoyable comics currently. The idea is intriguing and the art work is consistently good. I'll probably keep on buying them.

There's a whole bunch of them but here's a little something about the first one.

It's called Fables: Legends in Exile and the writer is Bill Willingham. Artwork was done by by Lan Medina, Steve Leialoha, and Mark Buckingham and the books are from DC Comics (Vertigo).

It’s a pretty familiar story really. A Manhattan girl has gone missing, and her apartment is stained with blood. A hard-boiled detective must sort out the clues. However in this case, the girl is Rose Red (Snow White’s sister), the detective is the Big Bad Wolf, and the Manhattan they live in is known as Fabletown: a secret city that exists alongside the "mundane" one we know.

Once upon a time, the fairy-tale characters we knew and loved lived in their own storybook worlds. Then the Adversary came, conquering their lands and destroying our most beloved fantasies. The survivors now live side by side with human beings, their magical natures hidden.

Princesses and witches, wolves and pigs coexist (mostly) in peace. When Rose Red disappears, everyone becomes a suspect. The killer could be Rose’s boyfriend Jack (a known thief from his beanstalk days), Bluebeard, who wanted to add Rose to his collection of wives, or even the lovely Snow White herself.

The investigation plays out against a fascinating picture of fairy-tale characters making their way in the modern world. Fabletown and its inhabitants are funny, touching, and totally true to life.

I've been reading it since it started as well, and have to admit it is one of my favourite titles around at the moment. It is fun, well written and entertaining and probably my joint favourite Vertigo mature reader title. (Along with Y The Last Man)

The regular comic has just past issue 50 and Nesacat summed it perfectly really. All the stories, fables, fairy tales of our youths have fled their homeland - which has been conquered by the Adversary and set up home in contemporary New York...

It's just been joined by a companion title Jack Of Fables, which after two issues looks like it is going to be just as much fun!

I was wary of Fables, thinking it was nothing more than a Sandman ripoff. But while it does owe a lot to Gaiman's work in basic concept and structure, it does have its unique charm. It's not as well written as Sandman (Willingham has a tendency to overexplain) and the scope of the stories isn't as broad, but it's still worth a read.

I happily discovered my library has a pile of the Fables graphic novels, so I'm working my way through. I picked up the second volume first, and then 101 Nights of Snowfall, and now I've gone back to the start, Legends in Exile, which I'm almost done. I read a lot of Sandman last year, and though I love Gaiman's novels, I could never really get into it. And I can see the parallels here, but this on the other hand I'm loving. I think I can relate to the concept as a whole a lot better, and I just love the way Willingham's twisted the well-known characters into our world.

I have Fable but I haven't started it yet. Reading this thread though, I can't wait to start!!!

Fables! Yay! What a great, great, great series this is... imo, of course :)

i am waiting for mine to arrive int he mail. Volumes 1-9 and the 1001 Nights of Snowfall. can't wait!!!

I've been reading it lately, and I'm addicted to it!

One thing is though, the artwork does vary a bit between the volumes?

A lot of the characters are hilarious- Prince Charming makes me shudder though, because he is JUST like me horrible ex boyfriend, eugh.

I've been rationing myself to one volume a week... will run out soon, argh.

Haha Fables are good for laughing! I especially like the evil army of woodmen and their side of the story. It was quite a strange concept, but a good one. Of course, my favourite would be the Bigby Wolf... but Boy Blue quite surprised me with his courage and acts through the Homelands. Baba Yaga is also very nicely portrayed

Prince Charming is the king of bastards. The only thing he's probably good at is running the mayor's office. Just have to keep him away from anything female (every species included) XD
