Boy, one thread just leads to another :) . In the Guy Gavriel Kay thread I mentioned how I love the type of story that takes a present day person and exposes them to a different fantasy world. Some of the ones that I've read and enjoyed - War of the Flowers, Fionavar Tapestry, Thomas Covenant, The Hickory Staff.
Any other recommendastions?
P.S. I prefer fantasy not sci-fi.

This one is going to test my meory, the problem with not having all my books at hand...

But some that stand out in my mind are:

The Song of Albion Trilogy by Stephen Lawhead. Pretty much a tip of the hat to C S Lewis but good fun crossing from our world to a Celtic Albion.

The Spellsong Cycle by L E Modesitt jr. Nowhere near as good as his Recluce novel the five books are still entertaining, especially the early ones, and certainly confirms that Modesitt can write a fine climax.

It does not get as many mentions as Thomas Covenant, Donaldson wrote the two books of Mordants Need (If you haven't read them already)

And, or course there are the Narnia books by C S Lewis... and another kids book but one that sticks with me from far too many years ago is Alpha Centauri by Robert Siegel - lost my copy long, long ago and have never found another!

Well that's the ones straight off the top of my head...

Second and third book of His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) feature Will Parry, from "our" world, travelling through the alternative dimensions, after first book introduces us to them. Read all three, though, for good measure.

Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series deals with some RPGers thrust into a land of swords & sorcery.
Its been about 2 decades since I read it so Im not going to vouch for the quality, IF you could even track them down... :)

Interesting. I've been interested in that type of plot for awhile now. Thanks.

Witch World (the first book in the series) by Andre Norton is another one of these.

The Last Rune series by Mark Anthony was quite good, though I still don't think I've finished the entire series. Gotta chase that up. Also, a classic: Peter Pan, the play or the book...

I recommend Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson. Originally published in 1953, it is considered a fantasy classic and rightfully so!

The main character is transported from WWII into an alternate fantasy world. You really should read it. Even more than a half-century later, it’s a great fantasy read that has withstood the test of time.

Apart from some of those mentioned above, there are only two that I have read but cannot remember the authors.

In the first book, set in South Africa, a young RPGer is physically transported into the game itself...leaving his sister? to get him out.

In the other one...I remember someone walking through an empty house, leaving by the back door and finding himself in another world.

Sorry for lack of the really necessary information but someone may recognise the stories

Lest Darkness Fall, by L. Sprague de Camp
Land of Unreason, by Fletcher Pratt and L. Sprague de Camp
The Complete Compleat Enchanter, by Fletcher Pratt and L. Sprague de Camp
The Blue Star, by Fletcher Pratt
"The Lost Years", by Oscar Lewis

A great deal of fantasy deals with alternate versions of history, including Katherine Kurtz' Deryni stories, several of Michael Moorcock's works... And some of the sf that deals with this theme actually could be said to straddle the line of fantasy and sf rather well.

That'd be Tad Williams' Otherland series. Or someone ripping him off. One or the other.

The infinity Concerto by greg bear wold fall into that category its AKA Songs of earth and power

Also the Videsos Cycle by Harry turtledove
The misplaced legion
An emperor for the legion
The legion of Videssos
Sword of the legion

about a roman legion that gets transported to an alternat world.

I read that about 18 years ago and put it in my bookshelf with a warm feeling. I haven't thought about it for several years. That may have to go into my reread list.

I resurrected this thread.
I started Mark Chadbourn's Age of Misrule (ominbus), and so far it's fantastic. I could hardly put it down last night. Modern day England being thrown back into a time of myths and monsters.
Other books I've read recently that fit in this category were the Mythago Wood series.
Any newer suggestions along this line?

no, though heartily endorse the recommendations for Barbed Coil (JV Jones) and, though its donkeys years since i read them, Donaldson's Mordant's Need.

I know you said no SF, but surely the most resonant fish out of water is Arthur Dent, he of the Hitchhikers fame. All he ever wanted was a cup of tea.
