Who agrees with me that Waylander is THE coolest character in any book, movie or anything. I've created this Thread so we can talk about Waylander.

not THE coolest ever, but certainly very cool. i always liked waylander, more than any other gemmel character of that type, i think.

That was a good idea. You know who was really cool, though? Andrew, the robot from The Bicentennial Man. He had a lot going for him, but was he really human in the end? Thoughts?

edit: :D
I said talk about Waylander, and you kind of sidetracked there. And I think Waylander is THE coolest, I mean, in Hero in the Shadows, the ending it's so cool, and Waylander is so ******** funny and so cool in Waylander II: Realm of the Wolf

He is a cool character, and in many respects he is the fantasy equivalent of Shannow. They have very similar approaches to life. Hero in the Shadows is my favourite Waylander book, he does kick so much arse, especially in the ending.

Hi all. 1st post ever here lol. omg Waylander is the best character in any book i have ever read lol his soooooo deadly but very cool about it. i love some of the cool things he says like for example (just thinking off the top of my head) in hero in the shadows when Waylander is about to kill Panagyn, Arics brother. and Panagyn says "Face me like a man" and waylander just cooly replies "no". that is sooo cool lol but yea his just awesome. and also his death was unbelievably awesome even though i was very sad about him dying i think it was the best possible way for him to go out, saving his family. and i mean once he had already been killed, and to Ustarte giving him some time left to live. Did he waste it? No! He did amazing haha. wow long post

I found him much more interesting in the third book, Hero in the Shadows. Previously I found him too much like a lone gunslinger, but in the third book the character's amorality really shone through - when the land is invaded in demons, he dismisses it as just another war, and declares his intention not to get involved. Relative morality is a good way to personally engage me. :)

Alternatively Shannow, in his third book, actively trys to set the world to rights...with less than ideal results. Perhaps Waylander had the better idea!

I've always felt that Waylander, rather than being an anti-hero is more of a reluctant hero. He usually ends up doing the heroic action in spite of his 'better judgement'.

It was the period of his life when he only listened to his 'better judgement' which was his darkest, culminating in the slaying of a good man which led to a horrifying bloody war causing the deaths of thousands (millions?) of people. It was probably that action which which sowed enough self doubt in his 'better judgement' to cause him to save Dardalion.

You feel it in Waylander's bones when ever he has to do something heroic: "Really? Is there no one else? Urgh, fine!"

My first post. For me, it has always been Jon Shannow who is the coolest. I love Waylander and he is definitely cool, but not as cool as Jon. Just the way he doesn't ever get rattled and always seems to be in control. Blazing fast guns and ice cool when outnumbered. DG was cool too. Met him in 1986 signing copies of (strangely enough) Waylander in Athena in Manchester. Got my copy, read once, forever treasured.

Yes he was. I was intially taken aback by how imposing he was. He must have been something like 6' 5" and as broad as a barn door. Stood there with his black leather jacket on, hair slicked back. He was all on his own as he wan't well known then. Had a good chat with him ( and his deep voice), then after about 5 minutes a nice looking woman walked up with his book and his attention was broken. lol. Happy memories.

I've not read the Troy trilogy. I just can't bring myself to do it because it means there's nothing new to read from him. I still remember that day back in 2006 when my wife said "have you heard about David Gemmell". Still brings tears to my eyes, 10 years on.
