Re: David Gemmell

this is a terrible loss to the world of fantasty and my thoughts are with his family at this sad time. David Gemmell was one of my all time heros and was probably my favourite author and brought me to the world of fantasy and one late night last year with a google search to find this site

R.I.P. David Gemmell you are a legend

Re: David Gemmell

crap! that's so out of the blue. and upsetting. he was one of my first fantasy reads, and i love his books. that's so upsetting :( the idea that i will never have another new drenai book to read. i know that sounds selfish, but god, i loved his stuff. that's awful

Fantasy novelist David Gemmell, best known for stories such as Legend and Waylander, has died at the age of 57.

Gemmell had heart bypass surgery two weeks ago and appeared to be making a good recovery, according to his publisher Transworld.

I haven't posted enough for it to let me post a link to the bbc news site with the full story. Take the spaces out.

Oh man that sucks. I loved his novels, they were so easy to get into, punchy and gripping. That's just terrible news.

Re: David Gemmell

Yeah it's terrible news. I've been reading his novels for about a decade and always viewed reading his books as almost a vacation from the more wordy Tolkien-type fantasy books. His novels were gritty, and as realistic as fantasy can get. He didn't bother with the Elves/wizards/magic swords & sorcery but kept it close to reality. His writing style was vivid and drew a reader right in from page one. He'll be missed.

Re: David Gemmell

David Gemmell was possibly my favourite author, certainly the easiest and best to read.
A void has opened in the ranks of the worlds great fantasy writers, and I suppose there are tales which will never now end.

Re: David Gemmell

This is pretty saddening, his books helped fill a dificult time in my life.

I'm going to start reading the Drenai Tales Vol. 3 book I have, which, looking at it now, is also signed by him and is supposedly a limited addition, I'd forgotten about that.

Re: David Gemmell

That is extremely sad news. wow . . .

David Gemmell was a major impact writer of the fantasy genre. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

Re: David Gemmell

Although I've never particualrly enjoyed his books, the guy made a huge impact on the fantasy genre. What a shame:(

Re: David Gemmell

I'm yet to read any of his books but understand how important he has been to the genre.

May he Rest In Peace. My thoughts and best wishes go out to his family.

xx

Re: David Gemmell

A terrible, terrible shame. I have not read any of his books for far too long, but loved The Drenai Books and the character of Jon Shannow was just a phenominal creation.

57 is a far too short life, but what a bounty of memorable characters he gave us - just from the books I read so many stand out...

Druss, Shannow, Waylander, Alexander and so many others will keep his memory alive.

Re: David Gemmell

I am so filled with sadness. I am not sure what to think. He filled so many days of my life with his wonderful stories. :(

Crap.

I've never been a massive fan of Gemmell's, feeling him to be rather overrated in many areas (particularly Legend, which left me cold). However, I warmed to him immensely after reading the superb Wolf in Shadow and its sequels in the Siptrassi series, and many of his other single novels I've read of his have been enjoyable, hard-edged fantasy adventures. The image of the wreck of the Titanic lying on the exposed seabed of the Atlantic is still a powerful, classic fantasy image. I was looking forward to reading the Troy Trilogy once it was completed as well.

Having read his interviews, it's also clear he had a bloody hard early life and had to work hard to succeed. So condolences to his family, but he brought happiness to millions of readers and leaves behind a rather impressive and lengthy body of work.

Re: David Gemmell

A true British fantasy great who's enthusiasm and vision created so many enduring characters and tales.

A great loss indeed. My thoughts are with his wife & children tonight :(
