I didnt notice this until today. Looks like 4 Ice Dragon signings have been added to GRRM's Appearances:

Also check out the "Not a Blog" section for his thoughts on the attempted airline terrorist plot and some of the response he received from readers.

George had to go into ownage mode :)

I dont want to start into a political diatribe because I acknowledge that I am too close to the situation in my line of work....that being said, I do not envy airline security personnel....thousands upon thousands of people, and you try in vain to meet time tables and make things secure. Trust me, compare Heathrow with some of the draconian security measures Ive seen in the Middle East and you wouldnt blink. What we lack is the creative malevolence to counter these actions in todays day and age...and what we have is a generally unsympathetic population base....I really disagree with Georges stances and think it is irresponsible of him to post as such.

That being said...maybe he can use the time in airport security to write some more....i mean cmon, scribble some notes or something...oh wait can you take a pencil on a flight? Is paper a weapon? Im so confused

Oh and the bit about the lighters, he has a point...if yer gonna confiscate then resell at the very least it should go to charity...maybe a 9/11 widows fund or the Red Cross.....Ill accept anything really...just not profit.

Just like it would be irresponsible for you to post the opposite opinion? Really, it seems that whenever people express opinions that counter the current political ideology in the White House its "irresponsible" or "unpatriotic", etc. To shut down any ability to express disent means that those who seek to destroy the ability to do so have already won. GRRM has an opinion that doesn't match yours. Fine. You think he shouldn't express it, then that's your opinion and unfortunately not the one I would think best matches a citizen's rights in a democratic society. One could easily argue that it is also "irresponsible" to fully support what our governments are doing in the name of "security" and to try to squash any dissent.

But I don't want to start a political diatribe either ;)

At what point is too much security and at what point is not enough. Each of us draw our own conclusions to this. Big cheer out to the brits for catching them!
I think maybe this should be moved to world affairs thread.

Listen bub, at no point did I bring up politics...safety and politics are not the same thing, thats what I meant about political diatribe. Its a fact of life there people out there who want to kill me and mine for no other reason than the choose of faith Ive made or the government I serve who has trod upon me almost as much as anyone else. To think otherwise would be a fallacy. I feel it is socially irresponsible to use a position as a public figure to rail about a safety precaution. You think the airlines want the delays? and George goes out of his way to slam them and those security minions....go ahead and slam the politics, slam the officials, slam the people who make this neccessary....dont slam the people that are just trying to make it safer for you to fly....seems wrong. By the way, I do consider myself leftish politically and would never consider voting for Bush. So dont make knee jerk reactions about my political leanings based on my feelings about public safety. Those are two different things.

With that being said, I apologize for the "safety diatribe" and will now no longer comment on anything posted here. I will read everything posted so feel free to have the last word, but others are hinting this doesnt belong here...And Im starting to agree.

I have to argue that George isn't using his "position" to rail against anything. It is after all, his personal blog that he has so generously made available to his dedicated fans.

Id love to debate this....in another thread. ;)

So....who thinks they might go to one of these signings????

Seriously? Which location?? Anyone else?

I may get a wild hair and succomb to the urge to travel.

Cincinnati, Chicago and Indianapolis are all doable.

Apology accepted bub. I guess it's hard to visualize that tongue in my cheek. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the who is really irresponsible in this whole mess. ;)

To get back on topic (I got the hint guys, thanks and promise not to instigate any political diatribe...) unfortunate that GRRM is not doing anything in Canada. There was the book tour he did earlier this year, but hw only visited Toronto, Edmonton (of all places) and Vancouver. Didn't even come to Ottawa. I was in London, UK the same day as he was doing a signing last October but missed because of a business engagement. He did an interview with CBC Radio (our public radio) while in Vancouver if anyone is interested.

I'm planning on hitting the Indianapolis signing. I live here after all!

My wife travels to both Cincy and Indiannapolis for business. We are going to see what her schedule is around that time and I may go with her if she's there during the signing. We were also thinking about using the Chicago signing as an excuse for a long weekend trip.

***edit***

Also just noticed that the St. Louis signing coincides with his Archon 30 appearance. More GRRM than should be allowed by law!!

On a similar note, GRRM apparently made an appearance at the Fantasy Flight booth at GenCon.
:(
I guess no one knew he would be there. But Im kind of bummed I had a chance to go and passed.

I think as long as we keep bringing Baileys with us he'll tolerate a bit of stalking!
