hey group,

new here n have a question. but first..... i only started reading fantasy about 3 years ago and i think maybe i did it in the wrong order. i mean, the first book i read was the hobbit, then i read magician, and then asoiaf. but after that ive read a bunch of other books and they just dont compare. i seem to judge them too harshly becos asoiaf is so good, and magician was excellent. so my question is... do u lot judge books on how they compare to asoiaf or do u judge it how well it is for the genre?

Welcome to chronicles SS.

I fairly or unfairly compare all my Fantasy literature to 3 authors. Not in any order GRRM, Bakker and Erickson. All 3 in my opinion have raised the bar in this Genre.

Heya Southron. Glad to have a GRRM fan on board.

Thats a difficult question for me to answer. I had pretty much all but given up on fantasy before giving it one last try and picked up A Game of Thrones.
Now my interest has been rekindled.

Its very hard to not be judgemental after reading GRRM.

I tend to view lower quality books for what they are, light entertainment and amusement. Sometimes a particularly clever idea by the author will stay with you even if you didnt particularly care for the novel as a whole.

Hello Southron.

Welcome aboard. This is an addictive hobby.

There's no wrong way to judge (as corney as that sounds) what you read. Reading is a selfish activity, we do it for the mental pleasure it brings, nothing else. I don't believe you can ever judge too harshly cause its all about your own feelings.

I've put books down that I thought sucked, then found myself remembering parts of the story much later. To me that meant it didn't suck as much as I originally thought, so I went back and reread it.

That's a cool thing about reading, our opinions can change as we change/get old/dry up (sorry for the corney writing), so some books are better (or worse) second or third time around.

Keep judging the way you're judging, until you change, or not.

p.s. everyone I've recommended GM to has become hooked, so it is a brilliant work and a standard.

Also I started a link were people stated some of their favorite books, in case you're look for other opinions - Are all new stories endless?

hobb is good as well, feist got plenty of other books, and i like harry potter as well

can you please tell me what the heck "asoaif" is? is that George Martin's series?

thanks--okay, I figured it out. Funny, I see a lot of people highly recommending this series. I read the first book, liked it, read the second book--didn't like it as much and haven't read further. I may have to revisit them, although I have to say I lose patience these days with very complex, seemingly interminable series ala RJ (just to put in my own mysterious acronym.)

One should never utter the names of Jordan and Martin in the sentence.

Try the 3rd book: A Storm of Swords. It's the best to date.

I miss the Wild Cards series!

I will look into a Storm of Swords.

Robert Jordan has his own author thread, please go talk about him there. I do not wish to hear his name spoken anywhere near myself or this thread.

hey! who says I'm unenlightened? I've been an avid SFand fantasy reader for 40 years. I'm just trying to find my around HERE and testing the waters!

Why not read some more from the 3 series you have started reading? Lord of the Rings might be a good start. :)

checked out that list of books. ive read all the riftwar and serpentwar and conclave of shadows. and ive read wizards first rule. i think if i hadnt read asoiaf early on i would have liked them more. its just sumthin about grrm writing style that makes it all seem so real. i gave this series to a friend n she loves it, cept she likes all the characters i hate so it makes for sum good arguments. anyways cheers

Actually the list was for Southron Sword who asked for some recommendations. As a very nice person comprised such a list already, I posted it for his benefit.

I just thought I'd say hello to both of you at the same time, as I've seen neither of you around here before.
