I may sound like a total newbie (!which I'm not!), but uh.. what the heck does a moderator do?

Hey that is fine!
A moderator basically overseas a board. A board is for example the Daniel board (which this is a post in).

A moderator should check their board regularly. There are responsbile to see that nothing bad goes on in the forum. Things that are bad include

1) Someone spamming (ie submitting stuff to the forum that is not related to it, for example their business website)
2) Someone being rude/offensive/upsetting other members. This should be stopped

These are the two essential things that a moderator does. There powers are:

1) Edit a specific person's post or delete the post
2) Close a thread (prevent more posts to it)
3) Delete a thread (for example an inappropriate spamming one).

Also, a moderator would probably help by answering questions in that board, posting new topics etc.
