May I add my welcome, cstanleytech. Glad to have you aboard.

I definitely recommend Kage Baker's work - all of it.

Also, Orson Scott Card - although I have only read some of his books. I'd especially recommend "Ender's Game" and its sequels (as opposed to the "Bean" approach to the same story - that would be "Ender's Shadow" and it's sequels - which are not bad, but I didn't like them near as well as I liked the original series). Also by Card, my highest recommendation goes to "Enchantment" and "Pastwatch", both of which are stand-alone novels.

Another writer I often recommend here and other places is Tim Powers. "Last Call", "Expiration Date", and "Earthquake Weather" are, loosely, a trilogy - they are wonderful books. I've reviewed all three of these over on the other side of this site - chronicles-network.com; just click on "Book Reviews" to find them. "Declare" is another of his books that is really good - it was my introduction to Powers and sent me off looking for more of his work.

Thank you for responding.
I knew I forgot some authors I forgot hehe
Yes I read pratchett, card and hobb and a few others I am mainly trying to find a new author that I may have overlooked.
At this point I kind of wish I could clone my favorite authors so they could write faster lol

You and me both!!

Check out the recommendations thread (knivesout included the link above) and the 'what are you reading' thread has some others - there are some different authors there.
BTW - you listed Alan Dean Foster, have you read his sci fi or his fantasy?

I can't resist one more recommendation, as my memory was jogged by a visit to the library yesterday.

If you like books in the vampire genre, I highly recommend Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Count Saint-Germain series. She does serious research so that these books, set in different periods of history and sometimes on different continents (besides Europe, she has stories set in places as diverse as China and South America), are relatively accurate in their backgrounds. And she takes some interesting liberties with the traditional vampire legends. Also, in her books, the vampires are the good guys.

If you haven't yet, I'd also suggest Elizabeth Hayden's 'Rhapsody'. I've also just finished a wonderful book. It is 'Path of Fate' by Diana Pharoah Francis. It's her first novel and I picked it up by chance today and thoroughly enjoyed it. It hints of more to come as well so I have a new author for who's books I'll have to wait!

Actually I have been reading Hayden to hehehe
I have a small collection only 500 - 600 books mostly scifi and fantasy.
As for vampire novels the only author I really enjoy has a great deal has been Hamilton but lately she seems to be turning each new novel into a cheap trashy sex novel so I am not sure if I shall continue buying her books.

Ken Grimwood - Replay - story of a guy who dies of a hear attack, but then wakes up as his teenaged self and this happends again and again.

Peter F. Hamilton- Nights Dawn Trilogy - a bit Deus Ex Machina at the end but great read and ideas for the imagination galore.

Paulo Coelho

Currently reading:
Solaris by Stanilaw Lem and I've been told that his other books are pretty good reading.

I have tried Peter F. Hamilton but I just did not care for his style much.
I have also tried Dune, WOT and LoTR and all 3 series almost bored me to tears hehehe

Somehow, Peter Hamilton never appealed to me either. If you're into a more fast-paced read, I might suggest one of my favourite new SF authors, Ken MacLeod. He writes very gripping and stimulating SF yarns. Cosmonaut Keep may be a good place to start.

Apropos of Suggestions

Here are a few more authors along with highlighted works:

Neil Gaiman - American Gods (won last year's Hugo Award)

Philip K. Dick - Man in the High Castle (See Fantasy Syllabus post)

(or if you are in a mood for some light parody fantasy)
Peter David - Sir Apropos of Nothing
