MGM announces sequel to 1994 sci-fi hit
October 25, 2000
MGM announced today that it has fast-tracked a sequel to the 1994 sci-fi hit "Stargate," though there is no word yet if the film will follow the story of the spin-off television series starring Richard Dean Anderson.
MGM had previously declined sequels to the film in order to create the television series "Stargate SG-1" (now in its fourth season on Showtime, and airing in syndication around the country and abroad).
The film will hit theaters no sooner than 2002. The studio also announced a film based on the never-say-die anthology series "The Outer Limits," a new film in the "Pink Panther" franchise, and more.
The original "Stargate" was written and directed by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, and starred Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil and James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson. While Devlin and Emmerich intended on the movie spawning a trilogy, MGM opted for the television series instead.
