Ok, where do i start to get into pratchett? Which is the first book to read do you think?

It doesnt really matter what book you start with, Pratchett tries to write them in such away that you dont need to have read a previous one to understand the action in the next one. I started with Little Gods, but as the holidays are around the corner, Hogfather might be appropriate (I always like reading christmas themed books during the christmas season better than at other times). If you like a good spoof of the vampire and goth scene try Carpe Jugulum. A good one if you like the traveling wizard and barbarian warriors thing is Interesting Times where Rincewind the Wizard goes to the Far east country of Hong, Sung, Fang, Tang, and McSweeny. There he encounters the legendary fighter Cohen the Barbarian. Cohen and his horde are old men by this point (which says something about Cohen as being a barbarian fighter is not a job know for longevity) which explains their name (The Silver Horde)

I read only one Pratchett's book - "The Unadulterated Cat. It isn't sci-fi, it's the book about the cats for cats'lovers. One of my favourite books. ;)

If you want to start from the beginning, Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic introduce Rincewind and the luggage. Depends who you like the best, I sort of read them in order, with only a few in the wrong place.

i don't read them in order at all ive read most of them & one of the last was colour of magic. The first book i read was the weird sisters. i try and read them in the groups. so i read all the witch ones first then moved on to a diff group. i don't think it matters wot order u read them in.

I read them in the order of publishing, or at least the order shown in the front of whatever one I'd just finished!
Reading the specific groups is a good idea, so you can keep up with the plot within them. Saying that, the stand-alone novels are just as good, 'Small Gods' being a particularly good one, as well as 'Pyramids'.

I reallylike the stand-alone novels too. ive notlong finished small gods. i thought it was really funny. I always wonder if the characters from these books will turn upin any of the the other better know characters.

Mmmm, 'SG' is funny, but what grabbed me is the religious undercurrents, I suppose you'd call them, particularly with the referance to goats and sheep. Which I can't remember. So much for making a point. I'll be back.....

Oh, with characters turning up again, maybe you'll see the 'Small Gods' referance in 'Carpe Jugulum', where Oates, Omnian priest is reading from his bible.

i was bad and read the watch ones out of order:rolleyes: hahahah but do i ever do things 'right'??? nope

My friends brother told me some years ago that I just had to read this stuff, so I went out and bought "The Colour of magic" and "The Light fantastic". When I read them I didn't think much of them, and I didn't read any more for ages. But then I was given "The Last Continent" and something called "Only You can save Mankind" and thought they were excellent.
Have my tastes changed, or do his books get better? If so it is probably better to start with later books.

i love OYKSM and Dark Side of the Sun is good, but not his normal funny self- carpet people too. i do recommend him- and robert rankin if you like comedia absurdica

well i read Armageddon the Musical...
or A Dog Called Demolition
oer the first of the Bretford series... uh, I forget the name. But the others are best to start before you go onto any more. I really do love his books!!! Just re-read Demolition. Funny, v. funny.
Ok david???

Thanks, Skip.

I'm definitely going to read something by Robert Rankin next, as I like Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchet.

I had a look at Amazon.com and they suggest 'Sex, Drugs and Sausage Rolls' with 5 stars, though they have everything else with 4 or 5.

I love Terry Pratchett. I started of with Good Omens which is still one of my favoruites. My copy is so dogeared I may have to buy a new one. My dad always recommends Mort to newcomers. I think it maybe because his review of it was quoted in the paperback edition.

The city watch ones are my favourites. :D
