A few questions...

Ok, i've had sleepless nights trying to answer these questions.

1) On other planets, how come the inner ring does not rotate?

2) What would happen if you walked through the other side of the event horizon? like not up the ramp but going in from the back of the gateroom.

3) What stops you from walking back through? when they go off world, what will happen if they walked back through if it was still opened from earth. would you die, come cack out???

4) In the film they *supposedly* dont know what the stargate is intended for, but they must know if they've got the molecular deconstruction screens and probes and stuff.

5) How do you dial the gate manually?

6) How does the 'Great Wave' not put a hole in the iris?

7) Why does it take forever to activate the stargate from earth but on other planets its done in seconds.

Please end my sleepless nights!

2nd post, Wohoo!

I will try on some, errors possible :)

2) I am not sure, but i don't think you would travel through the wormhole. Possible that you might just walk straight through to the other side or perhaps be repelled from walking through. Not really sure.

3) The wormhole is one way so you can not walk back through, what happens i don't know. My guess is there is a force pushing you through (or something like that) so that you cannot accidentaly just fall backwards. This sort of applied to the episode "Waterworld"

SPOLILER

where they gated to a world under water. If there was nothing preventing pushing back on the gate then the water would all just go through.

7) cos they are normally in a hurry on another world running from goa'uld, have more time on earth :)

oh, on 7, i think the DHD is quicker than the electronic type thing they have in chevron moutain.

i have another question....

in the movie, i never saw a DHD, how did they dial home?

well two questions..

how much power does it take to run the stargate? i was reading somewhere that to create an artificial wormhole, it takes HUGE amouts of energy. the whole of the US should have a black out with the kind of power requirements they have....

2)perhaps it is possible that if u enter the source gate from the 'false' side u'll come out of the target gate at the 'false' side too ... but don't know it, only a idea :)

6) perhaps the iris is made of a very stable material ...

7) 'cos on earth they've a electronic device and on the other planet it is the DHD ..

3) i think too that it is a force that holds u back (like the magnetic effect when u try pushing 2 same poles together) ...

ah poor Tech-guy, I too have wrestled with these issues but I found the solution. Everytime I found a dilemna associated with the storyline, I managed to hear a little voice in my head which would say things like "never mind, just looked at Jack in those cute combat pants" or "what time paradox? Look at Teal'c bulges rippling!!". I wouldn't expect these same voices to be of use to you, but maybe you have a voice in your head which could assist.
Okay, maybe I'm slightly insane but it helps
ok. I'm going now.....

honest....

...the truth is out there.....oops wrong show

kel sha !

i'm also not thinking of errors while a stargate ep is running 'cos then i couldn't enjoy it. i like the story, the characters ... ALL !!

so i don't what it brings you to solve this problem ?
it is not real (i don't want to say with this that there aren't aliens) but if u compare every TV show u could find much logical errors ...

so enjoy and don't think too much :)

kree sha !

I think I can answer some of these. ;)

Memory isn't the greatest right now after a week long bout with a migraine that hasn't completely gone away.

3) What stops you from walking back through? when they go off world, what will happen if they walked back through if it was still opened from earth. would you die, come cack out???

In 100 Days it's mentioned, I believe, that if you go back through the event horizon you'll be destroyed. It's why they had to hang Teal'c from the top of the area cleared out by the wash from the wormhole activation.

5) How do you dial the gate manually?

If there is power in the Gate, they can turn the inner ring manually to lock in the coordinates. They've powered the Gate from offworld a couple of different ways. In ToT they made it a huge lightning rod and in 1969, they used truck batteries. In Nemesis Davis also mentions when SG-1 took the Stargate to Thor's ship that it should carry enough stored power that SG-1 should be able to dial out once. As Sam explained in ToT, the Stargate is like one huge solar battery storing energy.

7) Why does it take forever to activate the stargate from earth but on other planets its done in seconds.

Since they are using a computer to do the dialing, it is taking longer to turn the ring and lock in the Chevron than it does with the DHD. I kind of think of it like the old dial phones and the push button phones. Dialing took a lot longer.

Cheers,

1) On other planets, how come the inner ring does not rotate?

My theory... there are 2 ways to activate a stargate:

- automatically... with the DHD you enter the coordinates. The DHD is directly linked to the Stargate...

- manually : by turning the inner ring of the stargate and enter the coordinates with the chevrons. At the SGC, they use the 'manual' way ( or so to speak since the inner ring is spinned by big machines controlled by computers). That's also how they activate the Stargate when they don't have a DHD off-world. First they enter the coordinates by spinning the inner ring, then they provide some energy ( electric energy in Torment of Tantalus, nuclear energy in Prisoners...) to open the Stargate.

Most of the other planet have a working DHD so there's no need for the inner ring to rotate.

Excerpt from forthcoming 'Stargates for Dummies'
Instructions for Manual Stargate Activation:

1 Locate source of power.
If Stargate device has recently been severed from power supply, do not panic! The Stargate device (Release 1 only) has the capacity to store 1 activation's worth of energy.

If Stargate device has been severed for some time, energy can be obtained from almost any source. eg: Solar, Thermal, Kinetic, etc. Ones to try include: naquada reactors, lightning conductors.

2 Find a method of rotating the Glyph Ring (otherwise known as Inner Ring, for more info see front sleeve insert). This could be mechanical, ie a motor or equivalent in your culture; or manual, utilising Jaffa Power!.

3 Rotate Glyph Ring until Coordinate 1 is directly below Chevron 1 (topmost chevron).

4
4.1 If your Stargate has charge remaining, simply manipulate the 1st chevron by hand (push the V shaped bit down, then up).

4.2 If your Stargate requires external power, manipulate the 1st chevron (as in 4.1) and then apply energy to the top-right chevron.

5 to 9 Repeat step 4, replacing appropriate chevrons in the following order:

1st: Top Right
2nd: Middle Right
3rd: Bottom Right
4th: Top Left
5th: Middle Left
6th: Bottom Left

10 If your intended address includes an 8th glyph, the 7th chevron is Lower Bottom Right, and the 8th chevron is Top.
If your intended address is an regular 7-glyph address, enter your Point of Origin at the Top chevron in the usual manner.

At this point the wormhole should open normally (mind the Whoosh!) and passage through should continue as normal.

WARNING: The manually dialed wormhole is more unstable than a DHD dialed one. Unusual 'things' may happen. You have been warned.

What do you think?

Ok I think I have tackled all these questions pretty good. If you are still even reading this thread. Oh well I guess someone will find use of these answers.

1) On other planets when they dial out the ring doesn't rotate because it only rotates when you manually dial out. Except on earth instead of manually dialing out the SGC uses what looks like motors to rotate the ring beings they do not have a DHD and do not feel like making Teal'c go up there every episode to turn the ring.

2) The event horizon as you may know is a gateway into hyper space which leads to another event horizon but it only exists in one direction so if you walked behind the gate you wouldn't even see the event horizon this is only an educated guess though wormhole physics aren't that clear as a wormhole is only a hypothetical theory. Another answer could be I t doesn't matter which way you walk in you are still entering the wormhole and the rest of the ride may just be the same as normal. But then again this is only a TV show and maybe there is no real answer.

3) The stargate has a one way gravitational force which forces matter to go in only one direction In the Episode "A Hundred Days" they sent a MALP to through to a stargate that was facing vertically and when the MALP came up it immediately slipped back through the event horizon and was crushed by those forces.

4) I believe they did know they just didn't want Jackson to find out what they were hiding.

5) Well first you must have sufficient energy going to the Stargate then all you do is turn the ring clock wise until you get the symbol you want to the top or 7th chevron then you push it slightly counterclockwise and that pushes the chevron down and locks that glyph in you repeat this until you have locked all 7 chevrons

6) The iris is so close (3 microns) to the event horizon that atoms can't even re materialize and those atoms basically are pushed into oblivion. So that wave cannot be created with the iris closed.

7) Basically what I said for #1. on earth we have to move the ring to each glyph, on other planets you directly input the glyphs with the DHD.

OK, I'm new to this part of the Forum, 'cos I'm *really* not a technological person, but somethings been bugging me (and not Dane Bowers!) :p

SPOILERS 4 COTG AND THE NOX***

In COTG, how did Apophis gate out? when he's ribboning that woman, the Gate is not engaged, and there's no way that the Jaffa could have dashed up to the Gate Control room and used the computers...

Do I *really* need to mark spoilers for the pilot and fifth ep?!

kel sha,

this is a good question and i tried to solve it but the following points are only presumed:

-- perhaps one of the guards survived and Apophis ribbons him and make him to guide one of his jaffa to the computer room ..

-- perhaps he had a "mobile DHD" we haven't heard from that thing up to this moment ..

-- one of his jaffa are kind of race which can contact with the gate by thought-transmission ..

Or, they could have special powers, in an episode i saw, i cant remember the name but one of the nox people came and she waved her arms and the chevrons lit up and it was open, in COTG apophis says something just before the camera cuts to a differint scene and it soundds like he says somethink like 'Align the gate' (in jaffa language)! he he i make no sense!

Why?

Why didn't I notice that?

I think that really, you should 'spoiler-warn' jus about everything! (Personally, I find it difficult to believe that peeps would be reading the w/s without having at least heard about the plot for the pilot!)

You are an observant person (And obviously not the weakest link)!

muzungu

The iris is not closed until after the wormhole has been established so the 'Great Wave' doesn't put a hole in it.
