MGM announced Thursday that it will make a sequel to the hit 1994 film Stargate.
The news came as part of the film studio's quarterly earnings report. While MGM did not immediately say whether the sequel would focus on the popular television spinoff Stargate SG-1 or another aspect of the Stargate universe, a spokeswoman told entertainment news daily Variety that the film -- along with a theatrical version of the warhorse anthology series The Outer Limits -- was on the fast track.
Either way, Stargate fans shouldn't expect the new film before 2002 at the earliest, Variety said.
