MGM announced Thursday that it will make a sequel to the hit 1994 film Stargate.

The news came as part of the film studio's quarterly earnings report. While MGM did not immediately say whether the sequel would focus on the popular television spinoff Stargate SG-1 or another aspect of the Stargate universe, a spokeswoman told entertainment news daily Variety that the film -- along with a theatrical version of the warhorse anthology series The Outer Limits -- was on the fast track.

Either way, Stargate fans shouldn't expect the new film before 2002 at the earliest, Variety said.

Stargate rips off previous sf film

The other night I decided to check out a relatively obscure sci fi film, MOONTRAP starring Walter Koenig and Bruce (EVIL DEAD) Campbell. It was produced in (I think) 1988. Obviously low budget, but not too bad. About ten minutes into it, my guy pal whispers "Stargate." From then on, that's all I could see. The basic plot, some of the art direction, etc are one and the same. There's a scene where Koenig tries to learn the girl's name that is exact to STARGATE. Later she offers to make love to him and it's identical (same composition, action, etc).

Maybe I'm crazy but check out MOONTRAP if you can find it and see for yourself.

Watched STARGATE and MOONTRAP again after last posting. Gez! It's amazing how close they are!!! Check out the ending. Both have a ticking atomic bomb (red numbers) brought by the good guys placed in the alien ship that goes KA-B00M! The plot structure is identical: ancient artifact brought to goverment base, activated, military types go to another world, dicover humans from ancient civilization, etc etc.
Talked to some friends (who are really into this) and they said that MOONTRAP was very big in Germany (the land of Roland Emmerich).

Mmmmmm.

STARGATE=MOONTRAP

HOLY CRAP!!! You geeks are right!! Stargate is a remake of Moontrap!
