The cast and crew of SG-1 maybe heading back to start production early because of the possibility of the strike that is being bandied about. Even though the show is filmed in Canada, several of the people working on the show are US and would have to adhere if a strike is called.

What this means for us is that we could get new episodes of SG-1 during the strike and might not miss our favorite people too much.

Cheers,

phew...... no sg-1 now that would be bad. Perhaps they can get ahead of schedule and bring us series 5 sooner as well!

i hate to be a downer, but i doubt they'll start season 5 early. if the strike lasts for months it will sorta defeat the purpose of filming now. and the actors probably have contracted amounts of time off which means if they work now they'll be getting time off in 2001.
i think they might want to get eps shot and in the can and hold them in reserve until their normal start date.
just my opinion though

That would be my feelings as well. This is a precaution so that they can get some stuff done before the strike and proceed showing the episodes normally.

Andromeda is doing the same thing. Too bad more shows don't think about their fans like these two obviously do. ;)

Cheers,

dunno know if it's thinking about their fans or just not able to handle the logistics of it all. i mean what if some of your principals had already made plans to shoot a movie or other show in the off time, or if members of your crew were doing the same thing...it'd be like making you cancel your vacation cause you're needed back at work.
working so far ahead can also get expensive. people may be working overtime or, what if you shoot 95% of an eps before the strike but need to re shoot one scene...this is easy if you've just shot it last week and the set is still standing but if you shot it weeks, months ago and the set needs to be re-built and re=dressed for a 15 second scene that can take days to set up...it'd be a logistical mess.
also consider if they even have enough scripts written to get too far ahead.
tv shows is like local tv in a way, for every one person you see on the screen there are about 20 that gets them there...that's a lot of time, effort and coordination to all come out at the same time. it's like building a house of cards in a hurricane, it can be great but a heck of a challenge at the same time.

I don't imagine that this is a spur of the moment thing, they've probably been bandying this around for some time. Everyone has known of the possibility of this strike for what seems like eons now. ;) I would imagine everyone was 'put on notice' that this might happen before their hiatus.

Cheers,

how long do you think the scripts are written before they film. Will season 5 scripts being written now do you think? i guess they can only start once they are assured of the characters signing for the next season but then they start i guess?

i thought i read somewhere that they had scripts on about 6 or so of the season 5 eps...and probably ideas for others.
they have to be pretty sure that everyone would be there, mainly cause i seem to remember they're all on 5 year contracts...it's seson 6, assuming there is one, where we MIGHT see changes since salaries etc could be renegotiated and all that.
since the finale of season 4 is already done, htey have to at least have the premiere written and possibly filmed, if they use the same sets and all that.

Puzzled chup who seems to have missed a train...

What's that thing about a strike?

If memory serves (which it doesn't usually ;), the Writer's Guild will possibly go on strike. When and if they do, the a lot of the other performing guilds will join them in a show of support. Could be wrong about this though. I was reading about this while the other strike was going on and I may have confused the two.

Cheers,

Those !@#$%^&*!!! people went on strike 17 months ago! It's like living here in Dallas! American Airlines goes on strike everytime someone sneezes! ARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

If the strike goes on and they can't solve it, they might end up cancelling the series. that would suck and then I guess all of us viewers would have to fly to Vancouver and revolt.

Or they could be like Elizabeth Hurley, pretend like they didn't know about the strike, and accept and pay the fine.

I wouldn't worry about them cancelling the series. That, I don't think, is even a possibility.

Welcome back Sean. ;)

InfoBeat Morning Edition Reports (re: possible strike):

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Top Hollywood studio executives attended the opening session of contract talks with screenwriters on Monday in a gesture of cooperation as both sides sought to allay strike fears. "ER" creator John Wells, president of the Writers Guild of America West Coast branch, called the opening session "cordial," adding, "I think we were all very encouraged." WGA representatives are negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, which represents the major studios and independent companies. The guild contract expires May 1. Contracts with the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Radio & Television Artists - which represent 135,000 actors - expire two months later. A walkout by any of the unions would disrupt the fall television season and stall movie production. The loss to the industry and Los Angeles County businesses that rely on it could reach $457 million a week, according to the county Economic Development Corporation.
