Well, well he really can sing! Thought it was time I chipped in with my review of the show. First of all we had a surprise when we got to the theatre. Checking out the rest of the cast we found another name that we knew. The character of Miss Sarah Brown, the Salvation Army officer, was none other than Laara Sadiq. Better known to Stargate fans as Tech. Davis. It turns out that she is very well known in the local theatre circles.
Anyway, we enjoyed the show a great deal. I am very familiar with "Guys and Dolls" since my school put it on back when I was in Grade 12(many, many years ago) but Max had never seen even the movie version. The Vancouver Playhouse is a rather small venue for a show of this type and they didn't have a full Broadway size cast. Having said that they did a fine job with putting on the show.
Before the start of the show there was actually a funny bit. Tom McBeath came out already in costume to tell the audience that there would be a slight delay. One of the other cast members had got caught in traffic, behind an accident, and was late in arriving so they decided to hold the opening until he could get there. I thought that it was a nice touch that he came out to tell us about the delay and the audience accepted it without complaint. Of course we all know about Vancouver traffic.
Anyway I won't give a complete description of the plot since its an old story but suffice it to say that it revolves around two main storylines. It takes place back in the forties in New York. Nathan Detroit(TM) is trying to find a place to hold his famous crap game while trying to avoid marrying his fiance of 14 years. Sarah Brown(LS) and her Salvation Army folks are trying to drum up business for their Save the Souls Mission.
The story calls for Nathan to be a lovable rogue type who really does love his girl. I must admit Tom McBeath carries off the role really well. He was wearing a little moustache for the part and it made him look less like Maybourne. I won't say that he has a great voice but it is pleasant and he was especially good in the song "Sue me" when he gets down on his knees to beg for his girlfriends forgiveness.
Sarah Brown meets a gambler, Sky Masterson, who is trying to win a bet by taking her to Havana. Of course they go, she drinks too much and they fall in love. Laara Sadiq was very good in the drunk scenes, very funny. She also has a good voice and a strong stage personality but she really is so tiny!
Anyway after complications everybody ends up happy. A typical 1950's Broadway style musical.
Sorry for the long post but you did ask.
So that's it. If you have any questions just ask.
