Peter Straub's books are more on the spectre and spooks side of horror but he has some incrediable books to read.
I particularly enjoyed the 'Talisman' which he co-wrote with another famous horror author Stephen King..:)

Have a look at some of his works let us know what youthink?

I thought Shadowlands was quite good.(y)

Seem to recall that one was grisly.

One of my all time favourite books is his Mystery.

Wasn't taken with In the Night Room, though it wasn't bad. But Julia, Ghost Story, Koko, Mystery, The Throat and lost boy lost girl were all quite good. His short fiction has been hit or miss for me, but "Pork Pie Hat" and "The Ghost Villiage" among others are very good.
