stupid newbie questions

First off I would like to say that I am so glad that I was channel surfing over the holidays and discovered this wonderful TV show. Now that I've watched all the episodes from that gamma quadrant site (thank you so much), I have a few questions that have been bugging me:

If the DHD is faster than the SGC's computer dialing system, then why didn't they just switch gates when they found the Antarctic gate? It seems kind of wasteful to put the gate with the DHD in storage, doesn't it? Or maybe this was all part of the NID's nefarious plans. What does NID stand for anyway? And if they made the russians shut down their program in return for technology transfer, you'd think they'd ask for the DHD back. After all, it goes with the original stargate. (although since the point of origin symbols are different, it seems odd that it would work with the Antarctic gate in the first place.)

In the first episode, Carter says that they have to use a supercomputer to account for the expansion of the universe in order to get the stargate towork. How? And if this is necessary, then how come they can go to otherplanets and just dial earth and it works? And if the latter works becauseof the DHD, then that brings me back to my fist question.

Presumably Sam has the ability to use goa'uld (sp?) technology becuase jolinar left a protein marker when she died. Proteins degrade after a while, so shouldn't her ability degrade as well, unless she had the gene inserted into her genome? And if they've identified the protein, why don't they synthesize it? And if you need naquada in your blood to get the devices to work, wouldn't carter have to be eating naquada to maintain her ability? Furthermore, if Sam has the ability to use goa'uld technology, then why doesn't ever take that ribbon device they've got in storage and use it to kick some goa'uld butt? I mean, the logical thing would be for her to go spend a few weeks with the tok'ra and learn how to use the stuff. Then she could use the weapons on missions and use the healing thing too. If I were Dr. Frasier, I sure would appreciate that.

Another question along the same lines: if they've got zat guns and stuff just sitting in the armory, then why do they take them on missions so rarely? The zat gun is cool because you can either stun, kill, or vaporize people with it. Seems a lot better than a machine gun to me.

I realize that it is probably somewhat pathological to sit around and think about this stuff, but the show is so well done in terms of continuity that these little things stick out. Thanks for reading my rambling newbie questions. The huge stargate internet following is as amazing as the show!

lots of good questions, some have answers some don't.

DHD. the main reason for not using this i would think is security. It is not often that there is a rush to dial out quickly and i can't see how you could have a hand scan sort of system for the DHD or other protection.

The super computer thing, that is so that they can calculate the new addresses of the worlds they are going to, they have changed since when they were set because of the expansion. They know the address of Earth so don't need to do the process in reverse every time they travel somewhere.

Goa'uld tech. Sam is not great at using it and perhaps dosen't like doing it. We also don't know the long term effects of using it on a human without a goa'uld. also i think the show wants to keep using "human" technology to maintain the general mainstream part of the show.

Hope that helps a bit.

p.s. welcome to the site by the way!

Thanks for tackling my questions!!

About the address for earth - shouldn't it be different on every planet? In the movie, the address for Abydos (I probably mispelled that) was the point of origin + 6 constellations as seen from earth (I think one of them was orion.) So if you're on another planet, the address for earth should be the point of origin + 6 constellations as seen from THAT planet, right? I thought that was why Daniel had to find the cartouche on Abydos before they could go home. So shouldn't each planet's stargate have different glyphs, and thus a different address for earth?

If the goa'uld built the gate system, then I suppose I could understand them putting earth-based constellations on all the stargates, since it's the "first world" or whatever tau'ri means, but they didn't build it, and there's no reason for the original builders to have an earth-centric system. And since the earth gate has earth constellations on it, it makes sense that the other gates would have their own constellations on them. Right?

Or maybe I'm just thinking about this too hard...

Thanks again,
-margaret

i am not sure to be honest how it works but my guess is that once they know the co-ordinates for earth (they had to find them out on abydos as they weren't written on earth anywhere) that they can then use them anytime.

The reason the earth --> abydos and vice versa thing worked was because they are close enough that expansion of the universe has not changed the address. That means that the co-ordinates found on abydos for earth are still the correct ones now. These co-ordinates will thus work whereever you type them in from.

There are some inconsistincies between the film and the show but i think this works....

muzungu

may be the DHD is able to automatically calculate the shift in position of planets over time.

Welcome to TalkStargate, Muzungu!

Hi Muzungu!

In Children of the Gods, Sam and Daniel talked about that and Sam had to put in new claculations to adjust for the time because the positions of the planets had changed (expanded from their original settings).

Will start a welcome thread in Stargate Newbie Section!

Hi jsc

Thanks for the correction.

However the reasons that Carter gives for having to correct the calculations are incorrect. This is because expanison only accounts for approximately 3 light years per Mega parsec, equvialent to a shift of 1 light month for at a distance of 100,000 light years (diameter of our galaxy). This is less than the diamter of the solar system! The answer would be due to stellar drift, ie movemont of the sun around the galcatic core, this would account for a shift of about 8 light years for a planet such as Earth (ie one approx 40000 light years from galactic core).

Hi. Muzungu! Thanks. I din't even know that! I thought it was just general dirft. That's a cool fact!
