say someone gets shot by a zat gun and then is shot again 10 minutes later Does that second shot count as the second so the person will die or does it just count as the first? What is the length of time between shots counting as the second or first? I hope I made this possible to understand
Bye

That's a good question. I'm curious too.

muzungu

It might be that 10 minutes is long enough for the enrgy of the zat blast to dissipate, so a second shot would not kill

that would be a posibility but as to not knowing the long term effes of the divies we really can't be sure

Zat lasts this long!

I think a Zat hit is similar to the effect of a stun gun. Once you recover from the first hit, you can probably withstand another shortly after without dying. The exact time that would be would depend on the individual. For instance, Teal'c could probably recover in less than 5 minutes, while Daniel Jackson might take 15 minutes. If you were only partially recovered, the next hit might have a cumulative effect and you would probably still not die but take much longer to recover in your increasingly weakened state. Just my opinion - no basis in fact went into this REPLY. gfps

Canadian eh!

I'm a Canadian too. A lot of the Canadians I know are already stunned. I think one shot form a Zat would be enough to do them in. In fact, I wish I had a Zat so I could test my theory. I'm just watching Hockey Night in Canada right now. Its the 1st period of the Canucks/Oilers game and I can tell you for sure that the "Officials" have already been Zatted because they are really STUNNED!!!! gfps

Of course the non-Canadians are not allowed to agree with that are we ;) :D

Is the effect of the zat on the body to disrupt the electrical impulses of the nerves or something like that ( i'm not a biologist)?

There have been occasions where the two strikes and out rule doesnt always apply, see the S4 episode Entity (wont say any more without spoilering, and its too late for all that ;))

Also, is it me or when the zats were first introduced, they would knock anyone out with the 2st hit, but in the later seasons, they have more of a seizure/spazm effect but the guys stays concious...

Snide remarks about Canadians aside...

I believe that being hit with a zat could probably be equated in a very generic way to receiving an electric shock, ie from a taser. Obviously the zat is a lot more advanced, but effectively what a taser does is deliver an extremely low-ampage, high-voltage shock that disrupts nerve functions along the body, especially the spinal cord, causing a seizure effect similar to what we see in the series. If you repeatedly hit someone with a taser it would very likely kill them, however the Goa'uld evidently worked out a way to deliver an extremely determined disruptive payload, in order that the first shot will simply cause massive neural disruption, and the second shot will cause complete neural disruption. That being said, we can probably take cues from tasers in terms of how long this effect holds for; an average 100 kV taser will generally floor someone for around fifteen minutes to half an hour. Assuming that the zat is a similar instrument in its basic function, the time it would incapacitate someone for would likely be about the same. However, one can absorb multiple taser shots within relatively short periods of time without particularly adverse affect (ie, dying -- I wouldn't suggest the affect is not adverse ;), so I would postulate that the zat would be similar, though the effect would probably hold for longer. My guess would be around five minutes for your system to recover enough to be able to take another shot. That's at least ten minutes less than for your system to recover completely. However, as another poster commented, the affect is probably cumulative; in other words, several shots over the space of maybe twenty minutes could easily kill you more slowly and painfully than two shots in quick succession.

Now, think happy thoughts...

Evidence on zats

Warning: possible episode spoiler for Prodigy, Season Four.

Well, here I go posting another message directly after my previous one in which I suggested that zats were rather similar to tasers. Coincidentally, this very evening Stargate was on, and zats were used. I can now tell you this with certainty:

1. While I was quite certain that when zats were first introduced one shot stunned, two shots rendered unconscious and three shots killed, it is definite that two shots kill (at least now ;)

2. One shot does not even knock you out, if you're fairly fit and know it's coming. O'Neill gets shot intentionally by Teal'c in order to alter his body's electrical field, and he gets up and runs away barely moments later, albeit with the help of some convenient smelling salts from Carter. It doesn't seem to have a noticeable long-term effect on him at all.

3. The time required between shots to kill someone is longer than we thought. I am fairly certain I have seen O'Neill shot with one of those things before, so we can safely assume that the effect does wear off, but it is slow. Teal'c tells someone whose name I conveniently can't remember (it would kinda spoil the episode for anyone who hasn't seen it, anyway) that a scientist who was shot around ten minutes ago in the script would die if he was shot again. This seems to indicate that there is a considerable delay between apparent recovery and neural recovery.

4. The zats definitely do deliver an electrical payload -- Sam says so in no uncertain terms.

This should clear everything up nicely. Still can't find any conclusive information on the planetary designation system though. Perhaps I shoud try emailing Michael Greenburg and Peter DeLuise ;)

Torture Zats

Sonds like you think a Zat would make a good torture device. Just Zat someone every half hour until they tell you what you want to know!!!

uuummmm it's neurology

Neurology, which is...

I don't think the fact that Markpud said "biologist" instead of "neurologist" is really the issue here. For wont of something better to do, I am telling you this. Perhaps you didn't intend it, but your comment could almost pass for flame on a strict-ish forum (well heck, so could mine), but his post certainly wasn't flamebait. Technically, neurology is a sub-field of the biology section of medical science, so he wasn't wrong to use the term "biologist"; just unspecific. I know I have nothing better to do than nitpick your comments, but do you have nothing better to do than nitpick his?

actually ya and i rarely do that it's just that i like to be presisde when ever i can and also it hleps other ppl .

Zat Buffy?

I wonder how well a Zat would work on Buffy. Seriously, she can take a lot of physical abuse but what might be the "neurological" effects of a Zat hit on a slayer? If two hits could take out Teal'c, I wonder if one Zat hit would be enough to make Buffy weak enough so I could take her out? Mmmmm - Yummy!!!!

I sense an individual requiring immediate pyschiatric help

Well, okay dude, moving right along from the fact that you clearly have an unhealthy obsession with Sarah Michelle Gellar...come to that, is your obsession with her or Buffy? Coz if it's with Buffy, the actual character who doesn't exist, I think that mental help might be too late...

As I said, moving right along, and not meaning to flame you. It's a good question, and while debatably on-topic, it sure isn't on-forum. No matter -- I suspect that it would probably affect her a lot less; this is the chick that died and woke up again, and puts her fist through doors, and battles demons with sometimes-worse-than-zat powers daily. No, one shot would not give you a chance with her. Sorry. And I don't think you want her dead...
