the book of the dead

Woah! That's pretty neat. It might come in handy for school or (let's be honest) writing a fanfic...

hehe, I've got the actual book! It looks a little different, but I think it's generally the same - there are different translations.

Oh, it's my dads, he said he got it from a book club, he can't remember which one. Sorry! :( I think you can get large extracts all over the net tho...

I'm no Egyptologist, but the Book of the Dead contained all of the spells that were required so that the dead could travel through the underworld and be reborn again with Ra (Sun) on the other side. There were all sorts of dangers which threatened and during the whole journey Apepi (the snake.....Apophis is another name) tries to destroy the dead person. I

t's all very symbolic. The spells were written on the tomb walls and had to be complete otherwise the corpse was left unprotected. They even had a ritual called the 'Opening of the Mouth' during which the mummy's mouth was 'opened' so that it could eat the food and drink the wine which was supplied in the tomb. The spells also transformed the corpse into various things to assist them to pass safely and protect themselves on the journey, which was very hazardous, to the hall of Ma'at (I believe that she personified the Law) eventually the deceased's heart would be weighed against a feather by Anubis to determine whether they were to be allowed to pass. The heart of the deceased was supposed to be lighter than the feather. If they failed the test and were found wanting, they were thrown to Sobek (Crocodile God) and spent eternity in torment. If they passed, well, I guess they passed go and collected their $200!! :)

A lot of analogies can be found to religions today really, especially if you think of the Catholic view of hell, where evil-doers burn in eternal torment.

Hey, have fun readin all the spells! Haven;t seen your around the other parts of the Stargate forums... where do you post?

I notice from a title search that Budge did a translation of the Book of the Dead - is he the one that:

a) Daniel asks why people use (in the film) as he re-translates "doorway to heaven" to "stargate"
b) is famously misquoted with reference to the name of the Sphinx by many conspiracy theorists and others

not sure bout that

hi p'Teppic,
i'm not quite sure which one it is, but i think it might be the one where daniel asks why people use doorway to heaven to stargate, but as i said i'm not sure. Kelsi might know.

Erm...You kinda lost me there...

But still, to confuse matters, I think he may b mentioned again in Seth, when SG-1 are researching him on the comp (supposedly on the net)... but I'm not sure.

P'teppic, what do you mean by b)? Why can't he be both?

Kelsi,

I wasn't meaning to say was he one or the other; just clarify if that is one of his notable achievements?
