one thing i've always wondered about is:

if such a thing as the stargate did exist,

would the USAF and the US government cover it up,

or would we be told?

i'd like to know your opinion...

they'd cover it up cause it's much, much easier than letting the public know. think what would happen if a stargate became public knowledge, everyone would be clammering to go through it, wondering if we should just bury it...if we're not the only humans in the galaxy (which is very likely) it would start a holy war because according to some religions 'god' created man here in his own image...finding human life on another planet would pretty much invalidate the bible...and that just wouldn't be pretty.
also, heck wouldn't a gate be a solution to overcrowding, colonize another planet, or dump your toxic waste on another world...and would open such a huge can of worms it'd be a complete and total mess.

i think they'll "hide" the gate from the public ..
but i would be interesting if the stargate would be found in the middle europe ? would they keep the secret of the gate ?
if i imagine that they would find a stargate in austria i can't imagine that our army would have the might to keep that secret

but to answer ur question - i think they would protect the secret as much as they can like the other things (roswell, area 51, ..)

They would TRY to keep it a secret for all the reasons given already, and also because it is a source of Military Power to whoever has it.

Whether they could keep it secret is another matter. Remember Teal'cs' magazine articles. And the Russians have the beta gate, their intelligence is as leaky as a sieve. I personally, think it's unbelievable that the gate was found in Egypt in the 20's/30's and no one remembered it until the 80's.

it is possible but, well in the 20's & 30's so many people were carting so much out of egypt it's possible it just got mixed in with the tons of other artifacts...i think if they could have gotten away with it they would have tried to relocate the sphinx to a better location

You are right about the Egyptologists, but I also thought that someone might have rediscovered it lying around in a museum, earlier than they did.

Having thought about that a bit longer though, I guess it is possible for the military to have been keeping it 'safe' in that big warehouse that they have (which was seen in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark') in Area 51. The one in which the keep the Ark of the Covenant, The Holy Grail, and other artifacts.
