kel sha,

as we know the SGC in the Cheyenne Mountain complex is equipped with a great self-destruction device ( i think they took an A-bomb for this) ..
also we're told that the chappa'ai absorbs any kind of energy and transform it into his "own" form of energy needed to establish a wormhole ..
so we take the case that the SGC is under attack and they activate the auto-destruct is there not the danger that the chappa'ai "takes" the main part of this energy and absorbs it ?
perhaps they rest of the mountain breaks down and the chappa'ai is "interred" but not "in-functional" or is that incorrect ??

check out the topic "nukes and stuff" i created a while back, it kinda touches on this topic...

If the base was self destructed the gate would likely remain intact. See Chain Reaction, Major Carter informs General Bauer that even if the base is destroyed the gate will still keep on pumping out radiation.

when are we told that?!

tec'ma'te,

i don't know the exact episode (perhaps there were more eps in which we were told about it but it was one of the first episodes) but we were told that the chappa'ai ... i mean stargate ;) takes energy forms like sun energy, wind energy, electrical energy supplied to the gate and transform it into an energy usable for the chappa'ai ..

and i think it's the only logic explanation 'cos otherwise there must be some little men who must change the "battery" every 5 years or so :D :D

i think the naquedah reactors in the dhd that power the stargate only need to be recharged every few hundred millenia.
question: how do you make a poll? i want to see what people think the stargate is powered by, the dhd or natural energy?

tec'ma'te,

perhaps anyone will know here how it's really powered ..

i thought that the naquadah is like a capacitor which is loaded from natural energy ... and the naquadah reactor is like an engine in a car .. it give the power to the chappa'ai ...

if u haven't posted a poll yet i'll do it now ..

This is based on the assumption that we have seen by this point "A Hundred Days" that a gate will survive a direct meteorite hit, so Sam knows a gate may not be destroyed by self-destruct.

BUT it is unclear if that is the point of the self-destruct. To me, it seems the main point is to protect the earth. This does NOT require the destruction of the gate, although that would be preferable: it just has to destroy anything biological, chemical, physical or alive that has come through, and prevent anything ELSE from coming through. So, effectively they just want something to destroy and bury bio-chemical warfare agents, alien incursions and then seal/bury the gate. Which does work (re. Abydos, and Earth until 1927), but also doesn't work (see "A Hundred Days").

So, in the case of "Chain Reaction" Carter is well aware the point is only to trash the base and anythign in it; the gate is probably going to survive, but STILL ENGAGED. Which means in that specific instance the radiation from the test site will still be pumping through.

Which sort of points out how limited the self-destruct is, although the (conjectured) continued off-world gate operation past 38 minutes would be very difficult to achieve. :erm:
