Blade Runner the story of a licensed-to-kill policeman on the trail of four murderous genetically engineered androids - was one of the first sci-fi blockbusters to paint a dystopian (i.e. non-Utopian) picture of the future. He tracks down and destoys the group who had hijacked a space shuttle and returned to Earth.

'Gloomy futuristic thriller, looking like a firework display seen through thick fog, and for all the tiring tricks and expense adding up to little more than an updated Philip Marlowe case' Halliwell's Film Guide.

I love to look for echoes of our present in sci-fi films.

A new UN report suggests 1982's rather bleak Blade Runner may be in danger of proving all too accurate. The world's climate could soon resemble the urban smog shown in the popular science fiction movie Blade Runner, suggests a report by UN scientists working for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The sort of chemical pollution which keeps the futuristic Los Angeles of the film in permanent, drizzling twilight, could actually spread across much of the northern hemisphere in the coming decades, warns the UN.

Although set in 2019, the film deals with issues and problems familiar to us today, says Ed Lawrenson from Sight and Sound magazine. "Blade Runner was always a film that is very much about 'now'. It shows a future that can be recognised by people, because it is based on trends that we can see around us."

Director Ridley Scott took issues already noticeable in the 1980s, such as urban development, genetic engineering, and, of course, climate change, and took them to what he thought was their next logical stage. So what else did Blade Runner get right? Techno babble though most the film's dialogue is in English, the residents of LA in 2019 also converse in a patois of Japanese, German and Spanish.

Though few of us have embraced Esperanto, the 115-year-old "universal" language devised by L L Zamenhof, a de facto global tongue has emerged - English. More people now speak English as a second language than as their mother tongue, a factor that may explain the development of some Blade Runneresque hybrids. Some 31 million people speak Spanglish. This mix of Spanish and English words was born in the Hispanic communities of United States, but has since spread back into Latin America. An American academic has documented 6,000 distinct Spanglish words - including "bipiar" (to page someone), "gróceri" (a supermarket) and "aftersheif" (aftershave).
Singapore too boasts hybrid language, Singlish - English punctuated by words such as "obiang" (bad) and "kayu" (stupid). Variations on English may not have it all their own way though. The languages of China may play an increasingly important global role. Thanks to the rapid growth of the Internet in the People's Republic, it is predicted Chinese will become the dominant e-language well before 2019. Eyes on the skies The skies of Ridley Scott's LA are almost as crowded as its teeming streets. Huge "blimp" billboards roaming above the city might have seemed fanciful in 1982, but the airship is now promising to make a comeback.
Dirigibles - currently still an exotic sight in our skies - have been suggested as perfect floating platforms for mobile phone masts. Sky Station, a company fronted by former US secretary of state Alexander Haig, has said 250 airships could offer videophone and Internet access to 80% of the world's population. A German company also has hopes of creating a new generation of super blimps - capable of carrying huge 160-tonne payloads. The flying cars envisaged in Blade Runner may be farther off. However, the public appetite for personal air transport seems as keen as ever. Witness the excitement surrounding the development of the Solo Trek, a prototype helicopter backpack.
"We have all been dreaming of such a vehicle for many years," said Michael Moshier, boss of the Solo Trek's makers. "Now the dream is about to become a reality." Such is our desire for highways in the sky, that when top US inventor Dean Kamen admitted to be working on something to "profoundly" change our cites, many BBC News Online users suggested a Blade Runner "hover car" was on the cards. More human than human Robots and androids are nothing new in sci-fi. But just as Stanley Kubrick's 2001 pondered the implications of building super-intelligent computers, Blade Runner looks at what might happen if we create machines in our image. The "replicant" androids, which run amok in the film, are greatly troubled by their lack of meaningful memories and emotional inexperience.

The film's message has not been lost on those developing so-called artificial intelligence. Dr. Anne Foerst, an AI researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Lutheran minister, uses Blade Runner as a teaching aid. "The movie raises this wonderful question: how do humanoid creatures feel about having been created by us and how do they deal with their human-made limitations?" Not all the movie's predictions have come true. The cityscape was littered with advertising hoardings and neon displays - many of which related to companies, which have since suffered the so-called curse of Blade Runner. Airline Pan Am, games console maker Atari and telephone company Bell were ubiquitous in the early 1980s. Today, let alone in 2019, they have largely disappeared from the public consciousness.

The whole status of artificial AI and its portraol in films (almost always as bad is interesting). I am looking forwad to AI the new film directed by Stephen Speielberg i think whenever that comes out.
 
I absolutely love this film, it was the first film I bought.

Many interesting points David, especially about the AI developers... Will we make artificial life forms that truly resemble humans? And will be give them such levels of self-awareness that they question themselves and us?

Or will they develop such traits by themselves, as a virtue of the level of intelligence I honestly believe we will be able to program them with in the near future...

Also interesting about the bleak cityscape, which has been portrayed simillarly in many films.. If we don't get a serious grip on pollution, this will become a reality, do doubt at all. And even if we do cut pollution, it may already be too late to stop some cities from becoming so filthy that the air isn't breathable..

IIRC Coca-Cola features pretty prominently on the neon ads, I'm hoping they wont be dissapearing any time soon ;)
 
I have never seen this movie, but your posts make me want to run out and buy it!

All this and the lurvely (for an older man, but significantly younger at the time this movie was made) Harrison Ford...

I can't believe that you haven't seen Bladerunner before!

Don't believe the reviews I copied. Reviewers never like Science Fiction unless it's a Science Fiction magazine.

And forget Harrison Ford, it has Darryl Hannah and Sean Young in it!

I don't know why I've never seen this movie---will rectify the situation first chance I get!

I agree about the reviewers. I wrote about that in another thread somewhere, how critics in general can be so biased against the science fiction genre. It can get a little annoying sometimes, because they make it sound like anyone who finds sci-fi interesting is a first-class moron. In my opinion, sci-fi offers many thought-provoking subjects in a very interesting way (much more so than a lot of the more accepted "ordinary" TV/movie fare out there). I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Enjoying sci-fi entails a suspension of disbelief to a certain extent, and some people just don't seem willing or able to do it. Their loss!

thats very true, I think it's why it appeals to me, as you can just watch it as an enjoyable film/show by itself, or you can start to think about it, and find more interesting things within it when you do
 
It's much better. There's a dream sequence that's very important, and is a further clue to something that may not be obvious from seeing the original cut.
The lack of the voiceover, btw, is a huge bonus. You don't realise how bad it is until you hear it again after seeing the Director's Cut.
 
Part of the reason the voicover is so bad, is that Harrison Ford himself hated having to do it. He felt the movie stood on its own as well, without narration. So he did a pretty bad job when called back in for the dubbing.
 
It has been frequently commented on how quickly the companies on the advertising hordings in 'Blade Runner' have now gone.

Companies such as Pan Am and Atari must have seemed destined to live forever back in the '80's but now are old history.

'Minority Report' also makes use of advertising, now known as product placement. I wonder if The Gap, Guinness and Lexus cars will stand the test of time.
