how does the iris from the stargate mechanical works?
How many items has she?

not sure if i understand your question. the iris is a metal shield made if either titanium or a trinium-titanium compound(depending on where you are in the series) it is attached to the gate somehow and placed 3 micrometers from the event horizon. the theory is that it won't allow matter to fully reintegrate as it passes through the event horizon. so in theory if a jaffa follows a team home, if they close the iris in time the jaffa will just splat on the iris...course he splats as molecules so there isn't even a mess...each team that goes through the gate is given a gdo and a idc (garage door opener, really, that's what it's called, and iris deactivation code)
they have to send the code, preferably wait for confirmation that the door will be opened then go through the gate...idc's are like atm pin numbers and can be changed or deactivated as situations warrent.

b) the iris appears to be a standard multi-leaf iris, as per the innards of e.g. an SLR camera for reducing the aperture.

One of my noticed anachronisms is that they seem to have built the leaves, and the mechanisms into the gate itself... which is presumably solid naquadah casing. And there are no motors visible for rotating the leaves to open/closed.

Iris same as in a camera lens except that it fully closes, which might explain why the points of the blades stick out so much. Get a cheap damaged lens from a camera store for $5 to $25 and tear it apart. The mechanism is pretty simple but a pain to try repairing by hand (lots of puny rivets and once an iris gets "popped" it's almost impossible to reassemble one).

Can't remember which episode I saw it in, but think it was one of the first ones. AusGate also uses that anagram for it in deivce descriptions and Allan appears to be a stickler for things like that.

Then again, I think we can assume that it was Jack who came up with something like that - in a typically anti-science way! Though it was Daniel or Sam who coined the DHD acronym, so maybe not...
