Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0113481

Johnny,(Keanu Reeves) a data courier, carrying a data package literally inside his head, too large to hold for long, must deliver it before he dies from it. Ordered to transport the over loaded information from Beijing to Newark, while Pharmakom Industries supported by the Yakuza tries to capture him to get the informaiton back, the Low-tech group led by J-Bone tries to break the missing code to download the cure of Nerve Attenuation Syndrome (NAS) which Johnny carries.

I thought this was OK, but not a patch on the many other recent films in a similar vein, such as 'The Matrix'.

I like this movie it was cool. But I have to agree, The Matrix is his best so far.
Not only is a more intense theme but it have awesome special effects.

lol

i loveeeeeee this movie............the first scene with ke took me away...........hmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm a bit slow as hadn't realised before that this was adapted from a William Gibson short story by William Gibson, but the original story pre-dates his later novels and differs considerably from the film.

It's funny how things have dated even just since 1995 - the videophones don't look that good when you can have a notebook with Skype - mobile phones that are as large as Lady Ga Ga's boots - and it looked to me like he flew into Newark on a Concord (in 2021?)

The guns are apparently mostly paint-ball guns, and on close examination have the names of the makers visible and you can see the gas blasts when they are fired. The 'cybernetic gloves' are good though, I'd swap a mouse for them.

I know there are people who have had 50+ cosmetic surgery procedures, and realise that as I'm personally not that keen on having a cybernetic implant myself this must colour my outlook, but I still find it hard to believe that in 2021 everyone has these as commonplace.

Keanu does act in this film, for all those who think he can't. However, he is meant to be so naive and unsophisticated in the world of the Lotechs that he requires Jane as his bodyguard - yet he rescues her on at least three occasions.

Having read the short story I couldn't see them making a film which had the same 'downbeat' ending - and they didn't. In fact it was more 'inspired by' than 'based on' the original, but it has it's moments. Jane was miscast though and should have been older and wiser - with the mirrorshade implants.
