As Star Trek: Voyager prepares to dock for the final time, rumors are rife about its successor. The currently untitled show is believed to be based prior to the original series - although whether that means the crew will be relying on knobs and levers remains to be seen - on the original Enterprise, captained this time by Captain Jackson Archer. So who could possibly follow in the shadoes of Bill Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks and Kate Mulgrew? Word has it that former Quantum Leaper and genre star Scott Bakula may be leaping into the captain's chair, for a character which 'exhibits a sense of wonder and excitement, as well as a little trepidation about the strange things he will encounter. He holds a grudge against eh Vulcans, who he blames for impeding Humanity's progress. But his science officer is Vulcan, and he's struggling to reconsider those preconceptions.'

While producer Rick Berman constantly denies that the show will be a retro Trek adventure, everything seem to point to a pre-original series, and if that's the case, maybe the franchise can warp its way out of the current rut.

Cheers,

Will be great to see Scott Bakula in Star Trek, in any character. He's a great actor. ;)

Just from the description of the character, I can see Bakula playing it very well. He has the look and can show the innocence and wonder better than most actors I can think of.

Cheers,

He would do well in the role.

While not confirmed, he's still considered the front runner.

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he suggested that the new series should be 100 years after Voyager in the alpha quadrant.

I thought that would be interesting.:rolly2: :D

I know there are quite a few people on here who object to a show that would be set before TOS, but my feeling is that if we limit our imaginations to only the future we are missing out on some really great stories from the past. IMHO.

I think it would be fairly easy to set the new series after Voyager or DS9 and come up with all sorts of new and interesting technology and what, but that in going back we'd have more character driven shows and the technology, even though antiquated by what we're used to seeing, would be just as effective with the new advances in film making. Also the problems that the characters would have to face would be more of a problem because they will have to use what there is before TOS rather than rely on coming up with some great new weapon or whatever.

Again, just MHO. ;)

Cheers,

Good point MythingLink, I haven't see it that way.

I can't remember everything that we've posted in the 'Rick Berman speaks....' thread but I don't think that anyone objected to this pre-TOS idea purely because we won't see any new technology. It is more because of the way it limits storytelling.

Maybe this is a good thing, but for instance, you can't go to the holodeck, and have a whole episode based there.

You can't meet any new aliens, because if we haven't met them already, where do they go for the next 300 years.

You can't have a war with the Andorians, because it didn't happen. If they say it did happen, then the already established continuity is changed, and for me the fact that, in the past, they have stuck to the established backstory, is one of the plus points about the show.

Now, I don't know what is really going to happen, but if you have a 26th Century Timeship, you can go back and do all the stories you would like to see in the past, as well as many others in the future. Characters would still be limited by the available technology in the Era they visited, just as they were in 'The city on the edge of forever' or 'Times arrow'. And you can change the timeline as many times as you like, because its a time travel story.
