My Dad and a mate of ours called Tony told me to read. I didn't at first, but I was babysitting their kid and he handed one over (they had no net and the tv was crud) and being a bookworm, I dove in and never looked back.

Why did you start?

I started after I'd read all of his books for younger people, and had just got 'The Carpet People'. Finding it a bit too young, I rebelled against my Mum saying that the Discworld looked too adult, read the backs of Colour of Magic, and 'Light Fantastic', bought the pair, and also haven't looked back. Other then when I run out and re-read them, of course.
I started becuase, oh, well it'd be more of an explanation of literally 'why'. Because I love Pratchett's way of writing. Under all that light-hearted fantasty, there's a core of black-humoured genius, I feel sometimes.

thats why i love him so much.

uh i didnt rebel. i ws allowed to read the unabridged version of 'the stand' a few years back my parents are 'liberal' i have total freedom more or less

It wasn't total rebellion......
I think my Mum probably got a good look at the cover of something like 'Sourcery', and got the wrong idea.

i nkow u didnt really.what, the cartoony.. uh i now his name..... begins with j.....

well those? wow! i never thought of them like that tho the american covers are quite different

Josh Kirby. A friend of mine has a catalouge of fantasy art, and some of his discworld stuff is in there. It is very god though. Have you got the Pratchett Portfolio? it has artwork of the discworld characters by Paul Kidby, whose style is very different from Kirby's, but still very good. His ones in colour of the Night Watch and Witches are very good.

My sister leant me the 1st discworld novel & then I just carried on reading them until the latest one!

I was first attracted by the title and Josh Kirby's cover when 'The Colour of Magic' first appeared on the paperback bookshelves - never looked back! :D

Best wishes,
Hatshepsut

I started reading it & then once I'd finishe done book would ask her for the next one until I'd finished them all!

I bought the first one, Colour of Magic, as a birthday present for my father.

Then stole it off of him

I started reading Discworld, when one girl from my class had "Feet of clay" in school.
And I saw that and said: "What's that?" and she replyed:
"The greatest book on the world."
So, I borrowed it and I really enjoyed it.
Then, I bought "Color of magic" and "Light Fantastic" and It was even better;-)

Nowdays, I'm reading "Lords and Ladies"

I'm now reading Wyrd Sisters. I got The Colour of Magic for Christmas, and since then I am reading them in order. I really wish we'd get them here... :(

What better way to introduce myself?

Than to tell of what has brought me here (does that sound too pretentious?)

I got into Pratchett when I was about 9. My mum got a copy of the original print run of "Colour of Magic" from our local library to take on holiday with her. I got bored one day and picked it up. I read the last few pages (not a good idea), which actually contained a word that my 9-year-old mind considered taboo (I forget what it was). Infused with the spirit of rebellion, I read it immediately and have never looked back.

It almost embarrasses me to think of it.......:errrr:

Only just found this part of the site... only checked on Stargate and Ausgate before  but I'm a lover of Pratchett books and have been since one boring day when there was nothing on TV and I'd read all my own books so many times and decided to see what my boyfriend had in his collection.

Have read avery book since that day and can never wait for the next.

Electra :)

Ah! my first TP book, that brings back memories, I was a huge Douglas Adams fan (you may recognise my name :), and thought nothing could be as good, then a friend said "Hey why not read this new book I got called the colour of magic" so I did and have never looked back, I have all the discworld books (also in audiobook form) and most of his earlier books, if anyone hasnt yet read some of his earlier works I would suggest 'Strata' and 'The dark side of the sun'.

Anyway thats enough from me, byeeeeeee.

Oh yes... loved Douglas Adams books... have to say that my favourite of his is my copy of The Meaning of Liff... signed by the man himself... irreplaceable.

Electra :blpaw:

I can't believe you have something signed by the MAN, talk about green with envy, it was a very sorry day when he died :(

Ok now that I made you all mournfull i'll sign off :rolly2:

I started reading Pratchett because my grandma (in NZ) saw the book The Hogfather in a store and asked a ten-year-old if she'd read it. The kid said yes (out of fear I believe as she isn't exactly what you'd call a 'typical' grandmother) and she sent it over. I read it loved it, made my sister read it too and now we've read all of them. I also own most of the series and nearly all the maps, the pratchett portfolio, Nanny Ogg's Cookbook and the Discworld Companion. Has anyone here read Montrous Regiment? I f not I insist you do. Also is anyone a Phillip Pullman fan? His books although more serious than Pratchett's are still amazing. Last year my sister and I went to see the Carpe Jugulum play adapted by Steven Briggs and this year we're going to see The Fifth Elephant.

An old boyfriend of mine foisted one on to me when I was about 15. It wasn't the type of thing I usually read, but since I had read everything that I owned, I gave it a shot.

I think that I have read every book now, but I didn't read them in order, so I'm not sure! Still it will be fun to re-read them in order just to check!
