Welcome to the chronicles-network critiques board. This is a place to post excerpts from your writing for comment and critique from other members of the board.
PLEASE POST CAREFULLY! Moderators cannot remove or edit excerpts once they have been posted and cannot extend access to the original poster to do so.
AND PLEASE NOTE: The critiques board is meant for unpublished work only. It is not open to the posting of already-published work, either in excerpt or in its entirety.
We’ve got surprisingly few rules around here, but you should keep a few things in mind when posting excerpts from your writing on the board.
First - Please don’t post too long an excerpt at a time. Several paragraphs is best. The longer the excerpt, the less likely it is that people will have time to read and comment on your work. ANOTHER FACTOR TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION IN DECIDING WHAT TO POST AND AT WHAT LENGTH: It might be best not to post very long excerpts or full short stories here if you think you might want to submit them for publication in future. It is possible that publishers would not look favorably at publishing a work that has already appeared in substantial part or in total on the Internet.
Second - Indicate what sort of feedback you’re looking for. Do you just want comment on technical issues - grammar, punctuation, word usage, etc? Or do you want comment and analysis concerning the content of your story - does the reader find the story interesting, does it flow well, do the elements of the story make sense, etc? Or are you looking for both kinds of critique, or something else altogether?
Third - EXPECT THAT CRITIQUES MIGHT BE CRITICAL.We are all here because we want to improve our writing (and that includes me, your humble moderator). Part of that process is hearing what doesn’t work in our writing as well as what does work.
Fourth - If you post something for critique, please take the time to return the favor and look at some of the work others have posted for critique and share your critique of that work. Reciprocity is a good thing. It keeps the community going.
Fifth - If you are critiquing someone else’s writing, make sure your criticism is constructive and presented in a respectful way. If you think some element of a posted excerpt doesn’t work, explain why you don’t think it works, not just that you don’t think it does.
Sixth - Please be respectful of other critiquer's suggestions, even when you do not agree with them. One writer (it might have been Orson Scott Card) has said something to the effect that there are a million ways to write a particular idea; some of them are good and some of them are not. But there is no one correct way. Please keep this in mind.
Seventh - Just one bit of technical advice: double-space between paragraphs. It is hard to read a long post that contains no white space.
Eighth - Please, please, please remember when posting excerpts and critiques here that this is rated as a family friendly site. Please consider carefully before posting excerpts that contain sexual or excessively violent imagery. If you are unsure whether or not something is over the line in terms of the membership and readership of this site, please PM littlemissattitude for consultation, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
ALSO - Please be aware that all excerpts posted on the Critiques board are available for public view, and that you should only post *excerpts* of material, so as to not compromise electronics rights. Chronicles is under no obligation to remove material once posted, and expects all writers to be responsible with what they post.
