I was just reading the MGM Stargate site and I discovered this about the "SG" designations. I didn't know they had special duties, I thought that they were just numbers, so wondered if anyone else was aware.

The "SG" designation denotes that the team is a part of the Stargate program, while the number following the Stargate designation is to distinguish between separate Stargate teams. Certain teams have special duties within the Stargate program.

Listed below are all special designation teams noted thus far in the series:

Special Team Designations:

SG-3 - Marine combat unit, lead by Colonel Makepeace.
SG-5 - Marine combat unit.
SG-7 - Scientific Corp.
SG-8 - Medical team. This team typically will travel accompanied by SG-3 during medical emergencies.
SG-9 - Diplomatic Corp., led by attorney Major Stan Kovachek.
SG-11 - Engineering Corp.

Hellllooo. Soz it took me so long to get back on here but while i waz doin the fruit salad my stupid bruver came on so i couldn't. I REALLY hate him!!

you can't forget SG-13 (which i am a member of on the site)

Which is night OPS , but i don't think there is a SG-13 on the show but there should be one that does top secert recon or sabotage on the Goa'uld

I think SG 1, 2, and 4 are all exploration units but don't remember where I saw that.

i think they mention somewhere in the show that there are 13 teams -- whether this if b4 or after "A Matter of Time" -- but i heard someone say it --

so - 2,4,6,12,13 -- don't know what they do - but, i'm w/ Koala, that 2 & 4 are exploration teams -- 6 might be a scientific/research team -- b/c in "AMoT" Daniel was off-world w/ 6 - and it would make sense that this is a research team if he was the only member of SG-1 w/ that team --

10 may have also been an exploration team - (again, based on "AMoT")

H2,
based on "aMoT" with jackson going with sg6, when considering jackson's specialization, i'd be inclined to think that sg6 could also be an anthropological team. unless they found something others couldn't translate, in shich case why didn't they jsut send back images for him to check in the SGC?

actually - was just watching "aMoT" last nite - and i think they said SG-6 was an exploration unit -- (but don't quote me on that - i was doing about 15 things at the time and don't remember exactly) -- however - either way - *why* Daniel was w/ SG-6 is still something of a mystery to me - except that Michael Shanks was away when they were filming that ep and they just needed a reason for him to not be there at the time --- (yeah, me and my 'film industry' logic here -- )

I think there is at least 12 teams because when SG1 goes missing (oh that is Oh so rare!) <sorry can't remember what eppy it was either>> Hammond says that there are 9 units and 3 new ones....so that takes it up to at least 12 and SG11 is officially listed as mia in Rules of Engagement.....because SG1 think that they might have found them....

But just to confuse matters, in Singularity, (the one with Cassandra), SG-7 are killed off, on Hanka, by Nirrti. But it stands to reason that a new tream would be assembled. That change matters at all? ... Cos the new team might still do the same *job*, even if they're different people, so the title would be the same...

That depends how many troops are actually stationed at the SGC. It seems to be very secret, so numbers will be limited. How big is it? We haven't seen much of it, there are many levels not explored. How do they recruit marines to it?

yes. I too am curious on how come there are marine units on a predominantly air force installation.

a) is NORAD (on the "top floor") and army, airforce, or mixed forces command?

b) how come SO MANY people as know about the SGC can keep it secret - they don't seem to keep their staff within the base (as per, e.g. Independence Day) and they need to maintain 24 shifts and c. 15 4-6 person teams etc...

c) and how come so many SFs are able to be called upon at very short notice to be there - even if it IS underneath NORAD?

Anyone catch the reference to the newly formed sg-16 in 'Ascensions".

I guess that brings the number of teams up to 16 officially.

Do all of the teams actually go through the Stargate? If they don't then maybe the others are all those tech guys at the base. And there might be an SG team that keeps things covered-up on Earth, for example.
