Scott Bakula to Star as Captain Archer in Paramount Network Television's ENTERPRISE, the Newest 'Star Trek' Series
Bakula Also Extends Development Deal With the Studio
HOLLYWOOD, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Golden Globe Award-winning actor Scott Bakula has signed on to star as Captain Jonathan Archer in the new Paramount Network Television drama series ENTERPRISE. Further, Bakula has extended his first-look development deal with the studio, it was announced today by Garry Hart, president of the Network Television Division of the Paramount Television Group.

In the fifth installment of the landmark ``Star Trek'' franchise, Bakula will portray Captain Jonathan Archer, a physical and intensely curious captain with a bold personality. Although he has a strong sense of duty, he is a bit of a renegade and is not afraid to question orders or even disobey them if he feels in his gut that he is right.

Bakula comments, ``Obviously, I love the genre and am a long-time fan of Star Trek. I am also thrilled to be working on a TV series again with Kerry McCluggage and Garry Hart, a relationship that dates back to 1988 with 'Quantum Leap.'''

Under his newly extended deal with Paramount Network Television, Bakula, along with partner Tom Spiroff, will continue to develop projects that will encompass series, telefilms, features and specials.

``We couldn't be happier,'' says co-creator and executive producer Rick Berman, ``Scott personifies the charm and intelligence that the role calls for.''

The accomplished actor, who appeared in the 1999 Oscar-winning Best Picture ``American Beauty,'' recently concluded filming the New Line Cinema feature film ``Life As A House,'' directed and co-produced by Academy Award-winner Irwin Winkler.

Bakula is best known for his five-year stint on the innovative drama series ``Quantum Leap'' for which he earned a Golden Globe Award in addition to four consecutive Emmy Award nominations and three more Golden Globe Award nominations

The interesting thing there is that they seem to be bringing in quite a lot of 'new blood' as well a Bakula, people who haven't worked on Trek before. I don't know what that means as far as stories go though, because although many of the writers and producers have gone on from TNG-> DS9-> VOY, the powers that be were still always open to story ideas pitched from outside, and from fans, so it didn't get stale. But I think a bit of new blood in the writing and development could be good.

Have to agree with you there dave... will continue woith the tre path but hopefully take it that bit further...

I saw this online today as well::::::

Star Trek producers are said to be making more time between the production of the Enterprise pilot and its first regular episodes in order to have a chance to further enhance the series' quality.

Filming for Enterprise is currently scheduled to begin two days from now, on Monday the 14th of May. Sources suggest that shooting the pilot is expected to take about four working weeks, after which the studio will take a short break to prepare for filming the first regular episodes. Normal production will resume around the second week of July.

Previously, the producers said that they wanted to finish the pilot and at least one or two additional episodes before the deadline of a possible actors' strike, on the 1st of July. The one-week delay in the initial start of filming and this new short break might suggest that Paramount has grown more confident Hollywood actors will not be going on strike after all. With the extra time, the studio will be able to use the experiences shooting the pilot to tweak important elements of the series before going into full production.

Production on 'Emissary,' the pilot episode for Deep Space Nine, also took four working weeks in 1992. Two years later, shooting for Voyager's 'Caretaker' took far longer than expected, after original lead actress Geneviève Bujold left the series while production had already started and scenes with Kate Mulgrew (Kathryn Janeway) had to be reshot when the producers decided to change her hairstyle.

Currently, the Series V pilot is simply being referred to as 'Enterprise' on the Paramount lot. Though it is possible that this will indeed turn out to be the title of the first episode, this would not fit the naming convention used for all previous Trek pilots. It may be that the writers have not yet decided on a final name for the episode, or they may just be trying to keep this element of the pilot under wraps.

Yes, I'm coming around to this idea for a series now. I'm also bored with Voyager. Some episodes are very good, but I wasn't impressed with 'Repentance' last night.

Yer i have found some of Voyager season seven have been boring... some have been good

Series 5

One thing that concerns me is that this series is gonna be made with modern production standards, so the interiors, planet landscapes etc are gonna look better than TOS.. I know that going bcak to TOS style styrophene rocks and painted backdrops etc is not likely, but this is gonna make TOS look even tackier, which is a bad thing in my book...

ahhh so they did give it a name!!

Anyone think all these Quantum Leap actors are gonna ruin it? (sorry never was a fan of that show or it's actors) Someone reassure me.....please.

i'm not a huge Quantum Leap fan either... :(

But i'm hopeful that this change in direction of the Trek franchise will bring some fresh ideas, I think it has become somewhat stagnated in recent years...

I agree with that hope!

Maria8475 , which other 'Quantum Leap' actors are in it?
I read that Scott Bakula's contract includes some input into the production, and that he has brought some people from his own production company along with him, but I hadn't heard that he'd brought along other actors as well.

Mark can explain his point of view, but from where I'm sitting..........

How many spatial anomalies are there left?
How many different alien races are left to beam onto the bridge and start a hand to hand fight?
How many more times can they go back in time to change the past?
How many more times can the holodeck malfunction?
Or the transporters malfunction?
Or the warp core get jettisoned?
Or the self destruct stop at 2 seconds to go?
Or Harry have a relationship with an alien?
Or catch an Alien virus?

...........I could go on, and on.

It is difficult with so much already filmed (600+ hours), buts that's exactly why they could use some 'new blood'.

ok i see what ya mean but i do think as u said it is bloody hard to have done so much in seven years i do think it is time it ended...

i think Dave made most of the points I would make in this discussion, i'm hoping that the new series will not be fileld with anomolies and obscure technical stuff to solve problems, like re-polarisaing the neural biocircuits to get the shields back up, yadder yadder... Especially in Voyager they've used that stuff too much. It was because Janeway is a tecchy Captain, whereas Picard or even Sisko would stop them waffling and tell them to just "make it so"...

I am gonna close this thread as there is a thread allready open with the new series information
