British fantasy fans among you (at least those who live in or near London) might be interested to know that author David Gemmell is signing copies of his new book, 'The Swords of Night and Day' in Covent Garden's Forbidden Planet on Saturday (April 3rd). For those who haven't read his books before I'd recommend them for fans of fast-paced, heroic fantasy, and this book promises to be especially great (it follows up his most recent novel, 'White Wolf', one of his best). I'm also holding out for David to bring along his full-sized replica of Druss the Legend's battleaxe, Snaga, (but I think that would be fairly illegal). The signing is at 1pm.

I went to a signing he did here in Hull a few years back, so that I could ask him about the publishing industry. It was very interesting, actually, and as with any published author I've met, he was encouraging to aspirants.

His talk was good - especially regarding his first failed attempt at getting published with a "Miami Vice" style novel - and the rejection words that he still likes to shove in the faces of those who first rejected "Legend".

He's also one of only a handful of authors who wrote back when I sent a letter asking for advice on getting published in the industry. His recommendation was actually to find the names of publishing editors and submit directly to them, bypassing agents completely.
