Not exactly a starfleet history but

Nana Visitor plays First Officer Major Kira Nerys, a Bajoran female who is a former terrorist. She has been fighting for Bajoran independence most of her life and is skeptical of the Federation's involvement on Deep Space Nine. "Kira embodies the warrior archetype that all women to a lesser or greater degree possess," Nana explains. "Her aggression is not without purpose, but is passionately connected to her love of the culture, spirituality, and history of the people of Bajor. A mentally and physically fearless fighter, she'll do anything for what she believes is for the good of Bajor."
A New York native, Nana was born and raised on the westside, in and around the theater district. The daughter of theatrical parents, Nana's father was a Broadway choreographer, and her mother, a ballet instructor. Nana herself began to study ballet in her mother's studio at age 7, and by the end of high school, was tapping her way to Broadway.

Visitor appeared with Angela Lansbury in the touring production of "Gypsy," and later appeared in "42nd Street." Her other stage credits include "My One and Only," "The Ladies Room" at the Tiffany Theater in Los Angeles, and "A Musical Jubilee." While still in New York, Nana appeared in the ABC daytime soap operas Ryan's Hope and One Life to Live. Nana made her feature film debut appearing with Ava Gardner in "The Sentinel."

Since arriving in Los Angeles in 1985, Nana has appeared in many television shows such as Empty Nest, Murder, She Wrote, Baby Talk, thirtysomething, Jake and the Fatman, L.A. Law, In the Heat of the Night, and Matlock. In addition, Nana starred in the role of Bryn Newhouse on the NBC sitcom Working Girl.

Visitor and her husband, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine co-star Alexander Siddig, reside in Los Angeles.

Kira Nerys' family was part of the Ih'valla D'jarra, which in earlier times would have required her to take up an artisitc occupation. Kira was born on 2343 in the Dahkur province on Bajor, and spent the first 26 years of her life under cardassian occupation. Her father was Kira Taban, a farmer, who died in a Cardassian attack, and had two brothers Kira Pohl and Kira Reon. The family were interned at the Singha refugee camp, where she learned to play springball. Kira Meru, her mother, was an icon painter. She left when Nerys was three years old to become a comfort woman for Cardassian troops, and mistress to Gul Dukat; although Nerys was told that she died of malnutrition.

Nerys joined the Shakaar resistence cell of the underground in 2355, aged 12, recruited by her friend, Lorit Akrem. She spent most of her childhood as a freedom fighter, although Cardassian Intelligence reported her as a "minor operative whose activities were limited to running errands for the terrorist leaders." In 2365, she was assigned to obtain a list of Bajoran collaborators from a chemist shop on station Terok Nor. The chemist, Vaatrik, discovered her and she was forced to kill him.

The earring she wears today was made from the metal of the skimmer by Lupaza, after Kira performed really well on her first real mission with the Shakaar Resistance.

Kira plays Bajoran springball, a sport she has taken up in childhood. But other than that thinks holosuites a waste of time and prefers instead the real thing - a trait Dax is trying to help change. Even so, she does use feminine toiletries like epidellic skin lotion.
In music, she only knows Bajoran composers and doesn't feel artistic at all despite her mother's career.

She's never had much luck at winning anything before Quark's "prizes", but knows how to play Dabo.

she loves dabo... quark hates her playing as she always wins.....

But qurak fancies her as well

THATS true.... shame he never got anyone though

As well as Grilka, there was also the Cardassian Natima Lang. They were both deeply in love but they broke up when she caught Quark using her personal access codes to obtain money from the Cardassian information service.

i always thought that Kira had a soft spot for Sisko even though at first she hated him....

They had such a turbulant relationship...

She didn't hate him... that's too strong a word for it. She has a deep, abiding faith in the Bajoran religion, and this held that Sisko was the Emissary of Bajoran prophesy. She never held to the view that the Prophets were simply wormhole aliens. She therefore found it difficult to reconcile the fact that her commanding officer was a religious icon; and what made it even harder was the fact that he didn't believe it himself, and was uncomfortable with the idea at all. As he began to slowly believe, and to adjust and come to terms with the situation; it made it easier for her to accept it as well.

well maybe right at the beginning, before the whole Emissary thing. She seemed a little 'unhappy' with the provisional government and Starfleet. All that anger......might come close to hate??

oooo she did not like him at all... it was because he was put in charge of a bajoran station...

We may need to agree to disagree on this subject, but I thought that her anger was more with the Federation itself, than Sisko, who is only it's representative. You can understand that after years of Cardassian occupation some Bajorans would not want to be dominated by another power.

She also had an argument with the Bajoran provisional government, who sanctioned the decision to enlist Federation help in maintaining DS9. But despite all of that, she still took the assignment and worked with Starfleet personnel on the station, rather than say-- become a terrorist again and destroy it.

mmmmmm u could well be right there Dave.... after reading what u said i understand what u mean... i have looked on it in a different way

i really like kira's character. dunno why. i guess it's her agressiveness and her belief in her religion and for a free Bajor. she's my favourite character. :rolly2:
