There's a strong rumour across the internet that Stark Trek: Enterprise has only just scraped in for a fourth season, with no commitments being made for any future episodes.

Rumour has it that executive producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga have their jobs on the line, and may not even be involved in a fifth series - presuming the ratings of season 4 are good enough to justify one.

Either way, it looks like the future of the Star Trek universe is drawing to a close - certainly the TV chapter, anyway.

However, as noted elsewhere, one of the big problems with the Trek series is they often simply rehash old themes repeatedly.

Is there room for change, though?

Has the original concept, extended under Berman and Braga, really exhausted itself? Is there room for new blood and a change of direction? Or is the Star Trek universe long dead and merely waiting for the coffin lid to close?

In my opinion, Enterprise is so dull for several reasons. The first being a poor script - even old and tired themes can be done well enough to be entertaining. Then, they created a cast that had absolutely no chemistry together - I love Scott Bakula but he just didn't seem to fit in, and neither did anyone else. The third reason is because the actual stories aren't terribly interesting. If you think about it, the stories from the original weren't either, it was the unusual presentation and uniqueness that made it so cool. Next Generation had a cast that meshed extremely well together and explored new themes. Voyager also had some unique characters and themes, with good interactions between the cast members. Enterprise seems like a shadow of the others.

Are you sure you've watched the last season? Before then I thought Enterprise fell short of my expectations but now the story has really taken off. I hope they don't end it now!

Of course, I thought all the Star Trek series had more cheesy episodes than good ones. Enterprise, however, started off worse I think. Now I love it, and Flox has gradually become my fave Star Trek character of all time.

A particular problem, though, is that they are re-writing Star Trek history. If the history of the Trek universe never inluded the Zindi before, then to create such a huge story arc around them simply undermines the entire Star Trek universe.

Or are they - at th end of the zindio story arc - going to inflict mass-amnesia on humanity, to prevent them ever disturbing the zindo again? I should certainly hope not. We had Data carry suh a story before - it worked then. But all humanity? That's effectively invoking Deus Ex Machina, and Star Trek as a franchise should be above that.

Can't they just use the excuse that it created an alternate time-line and therefore an alternate universe? That's an oldie but a goodie!:D

Yeah, that's true, unless maybe any new series are developed along the entirely new timeline!:D
