James Tiberius Kirk.

James Tiberius Kirk.

James T. Kirk, Starfleet serial number SC 937-0176 CEC, was commander of the original Starship Enterprise. He was born in 2233, in Iowa on planet Earth. At the age of 13, he was one of nine surviving eyewitnesses to the massacre of some 4,000 colonists at planet Tarsus IV by Kodos the executioner. James lost his older brother, George Samuel Kirk (whom only James called Sam) and sister-in-law Aurelan, on planet Deneva, from an invasion of neural parasites. Peter and two other nephews of James survived.

At Starfleet Academy, Kirk was tormented by an upperclassman called Finnegan. He served as an instructor and Gary Mitchell was one of his students. Another friend, Ben Finney, named his daughter, Jamie, after Kirk. They served together as cadets on the U.S.S. Republic, but a rift developed between them. One of his heroes at the Academy was the legendary Garth of Izar, whose exploits were required reading. Another personal hero was Abraham Lincoln, an early president of an Earth state. He earned a reputation for himself as having been the only cadet to beat the “no-win†Kobayashi Maru scenario, by secretly reprogramming the computer.

After Starfleet, his first assignment was aboard the U.S.S. Farragut. One mission was to Tyre’s planet in 2254. In 2257, Kirk blamed himself for an attack on the ship in which Captain Garrovick died. Kirk almost died once from Vegan choriomaningitis.

He commanded the historic five-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise 2264-2269. His living quarters were on Deck 5. He was awarded the Palm leaf of Axanar Peace Mission, the Grankite Order of Tactics (class of Excellence), the Pre-Antares Ribbon of Commendation (Classes 1st and 2nd), the Medal of Honour, the Silver Palm with Cluster, the Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry, and the Kragite order of Heroism. In 2267, he became the first Starship captain ever to stand trial when accused of causing Ben Finney’s death. According to the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations, Kirk amassed 17 separate temporal violations during his career, more than anyone else on file.

Kirk was involved with many different women during his life, but was unsuccessful in maintaining any long-term relationship. He had a son, David, by Carol Marcus, who was murdered by a Klingon.

After the return of the Enterprise from the five-year mission, Kirk accepted a promotion to Admiral, while the Enterprise had a major refit. It has been conjectured that he commanded a second five-year mission following the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. At some point he retired from Starfleet, but returned in 2284 as a staff instructor with the rank of Admiral at Starfleet Academy. He returned to active duty in 2285, but was charged with nine violations of Starfleet regulations in connection with the revival of Spock. He was demoted to the rank of Captain, and given the Enterprise-A.

Kirk loved the outdoors. He almost died free climbing the El Capitan mountain face, was an accomplished equestrian, and kept a horse at his mountain cabin.
Kirk played a pivotal role in saving the historic Khitomer peace conference. He retired from Starfleet a second time shortly after the accords were signed. He was an honoured guest at the launch of the Enterprise-B, and believed killed during its maiden voyage. It was later learned that he had disappeared into a temporal anomaly called the Nexus, where he remained until 2371. He died at the hands of deranged scientist Tolian Soran and is buried on a mountaintop on planet Veridian III.
