Sulu came onto the original Enterprise as Staff Physicist. When the Helm Officer was injured he was ordered to take his place, and remained in that position. Born in 2237 in San Francisco, Earth.
Sulu assumed command of the U.S.S.Excelsior in 2290, and subsequently conducted a three-year scientific mission of cataloguing gaseous planetary anomalies in the Beat Quadrant. Sulu and the Excelsior played a pivotal role in the historic Khitomer peace conference by helping to protect it from those who would have disrupted the peace process.
He had a wide range of hobbies, including botany, old gunpowder driven firearms (he had always wanted a Police Special in his collection) and fencing.
He had a daughter, Demora Sulu, born in 2271. His portrait is displayed at Starfleet Headquarters in the 24th Century. He also sponsored young Chakotay for admission to Starfleet Academy around 2350.
