Pavel Andreievich Chekov

Pavel Andreievich Chekov.

Russian navigator on the original Enterprise, Chekov held the rank of ensign during his first mission. His Starfleet serial number was 656-5827B. Chekov said that he was 22 years old in ‘Who mourns for Adonis’ suggesting a birth date of 2245. He was an only child, although he once imagined a brother named Piotr while under the influence of a drug. At Starfleet Academy he became involved with a young woman named Irina Galliulin, but the relationship did not last because she was uncomfortable with the structured way of life that Starfleet requires. After the five-year mission, Chekov was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned as security chief on the Enterprise. He later served aboard the U.S.S.Reliant as first officer under Captain Clark Terrell. He was rotated back to the Enterprise when the reliant was hijacked and lost in battle with the Enterprise. Chekov was an honoured guest during the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise-B in 2294.

Chekov joined the Star Trek cast at the beginning of the second season, although he must have been a member of the crew in the first season, because Khan remembered seeing him.

hehe..so i shouldnt mention the one where Kirk gets into the turbolift ina green shirt and comes out the other end in a yellow one?? ;) :p

That's not an error.

In 'Charlie X' Kirk is talking to Charlie in a corridor. The Captain is wearing a gold shirt with a black collar, with the grubby stains on it. Uhura pages him from the bridge. A message is coming from Captain Ramart of the Antares. Kirk boards the turbolift with Charlie. Wishing to look his best for the Admiral, he uses the patented turbolift, quick-change device, especially installed for such emergencies. He then exits the turbolift in the clean green V-neck shirt.

It was never filmed, but Khan had a long chat with Chekov in the Mess Hall about Eugenics Wars and the crazy life of a World Dictator, when he first came aboard the ship, before he decided to take control of it.

Sorry, he didn't as far as I know (someone posted that somewhere else) but it is possible, because they were on the Enterprise for a long time before they decided to take it over, and there is no reason why Chekov could not have been on the Enterprise at the time (just not a Bridge officer).

I have a question for TOS viewers regarding Chekov

To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a time when I've seen reruns of TOS, where I considered Chekov as "always being there with the rest," considering he came on the show at the beginning of season 2.
Infact, as kid (when I was 8 to 10), I thought he was just another relief navigator who sat next to Mr. Sulu. Even TAS further validated my viewpoint with his absence.

It wasn't until the feature films that I realized that Chekov wasn't just a recurring-character (like Mr. Kyle), because he was in every single one of the TOS films.

Whenever you see Chekov on-screen, do you consider him part of the regular ensemble, or consider him "TOS ensemble + 1."

I can't remember what I thought when I was a kid. I don't think I knew when he appeared, because BBC used to show 'Star Trek' every morning in the Summer Holidays and they were all mixed up in no particular order.

By the movies he was definitely a main character, but even in the original series there were episodes which were set around him and his life before Enterprise -- "The way to Eden". Mr Kyle never had that. Also he was often on Landing Parties -- Mr Kyle never did that either, (if he had he would have been phaser shot anyway within a few seconds of arriving on the planet.)

Chekov isn't one of my favorite characters in the series, but he's great in the movies -- that whole character development thing, i guess --

he kinda gets 'left out' sometimes in the series - but he is on away missions - and kinda gets put 'in charge' when Kirk and Spock go off somewhere ---

something i never understood - why does the Captain go on all the away missions?? the 'away team' is always - Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty - then, later, Chekov and/or a 'red shirt' -- why do they need a doctor and the chief engineer on all the away missions? in the movies, scotty rarely leaves the ship ---

I regarded Chekov as one of the crew, not just a regular character, even though he joined late. He did have more air time and plot time than someone like Lyle did...

Always worries me how Khan remembers him in ST:II when Chekov wasn't on the Enterprise when they found Khan the first time.... (plot holes r us!)

oh, and Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty went on all the away missions cos anyone else who goes gets killed, so there wouldn't be much of a show with them all dead ;)

more like - those guys go on all of them b/c they DON'T get killed -- wouldn't be much of a show tho, like you said, if the main guys die --- talk about turn-over!

As i said i was talking about the TOS Series.. not the movies

Do you think there is a chance of seeing him again?

Unlikely, but we know he's not dead yet (well by TNG, DS9 and VOY he will be), he hasn't retired to the far side of the galaxy like Scotty did, and more importantly the actor, Walter Koenig is still acting.
