I'm not usually a fan of books that are--mm, let's say, Graphic. With actual depictions of rape, torture, and other squicky things. The books I frequent do occasionally have it, but it's done briefly or off-stage.

And I hate gratuitous Graphic detail.

Now, that said, I have to tell you, the Black Jewels Trilogy has all of that and more...but it's not gratuitous, and it's not done just to say "look! look! It's a bad guy! See! She's doing bad stuff!"--but if that sort of stuff bothers you, you might not want to read these books.

But that's not what the books are about--or I wouldn't have read them, and liked them so much.

This is a love story. Love for children, for fathers, brothers, love for friends, for ideals, and yes, for that one person you've been waiting your whole life for. And it turns all that on its head.

This is a story full of magic, depravity and hope. Of a people who've forgotten their purpose isn't to rule the land, but to nurture it. And it tells it very well.

If I start describing the Jewels and the Magic, or the Political and Moral attmosphere of the story, or how a Lord of the Underworld, dead for so many centuries can be a put upon Dad trying to keep his kids out of trouble...I'll start telling the whole story--and quite frankly, Anne Bishop did an excellent job of it, so why should I try?

Not for the faint of heart, and not for the underage without the parental Okay (some teens may be mature enough to handle it, but let's face it--not all adults will be). But for those who dare, I highly recommend this series Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows and Queen of the Darkness , as well as the standalone book in the same world The Invisible Ring (which is set at an early period than the trilogy).

I hope to see more of this author's stuff--and soon!
