Sounds a silly question - is he an archaeologist or an anthropologist?

Presumably a PhD in one (or both) of them. He seems to practice bits of both: the digs and cultural knowledge, whereas the languages and behaviours is more the other way.
Especially his huge knowledge of languages, really puts him into linguist. Bit of a genius really! :p

a bit of a genius??? congrats i think u just won the 'understatement of the year' award! :D

okay he speaks 23 languages, fluently. Probably a couple more by now.

In 'Deadman Switch' he says he has a PhD in Archeology.

We don't know about his official qualifocations in antropology, but they obviuosly exist. Maybe another PhD??

In any case total genius!

In the US of A. Anthropology is the umbrella that holds many fields. It run the range of specilizations from Primatology and Hominid Anatomy to Archaeology and includes such diversity as Psychological Anthropology, Ancient Languages, and some Modern Linguistics. It is a very diverse field and you can consider people such as Jane Goodall (Primatology) and Bass (Underwater archaeology) and Flinders Petrie (Near Eastern and Egyptian Archaeology) and Clyde Snow (Forensic Anthropology) and Margaret Mead (Cultural and Psychological Anthropology) as anthropologists.

Anthropology has always been a bit of a scavenger field and people can start in one speciality and end up in another with ease and study and acceptance of the soft science community.

Out of interest, do you recall the reference for the above?

He states that he speaks 23 languages fluently in the episode called 1969....they are all talking about finding a way home and Daniel says that they should go and see Katherine to find out where the stargate is.....Sam says that he can't because he has to meet her for the first time years later.....he says they can go in disguise......"I speak 23 languages pick one!"

Hope that clears it up for you P'Teppic

More than a couple more, he knows every ritten language, in upgrades remember he checks every one in an hour, or maybe he just reads it, what you all think?

I'm considering the evidence for all three:

Archaeology: As in 'Eygptology', I'm assuming: he's called an eygptologist in the film.

Antropology: He knows an awful lot about non-eygptian cultures, and the kinds of things that wouldn't be picked up through linguistics. Eg, 'Sprits', the indian culture/belief. In 'Thor's Chariot/Hammer he proved what he knew about Norse mythology, deducing the runes in Chariot, knowing about their mythology. He also flings back Kinsey's Pandora's box theory in 'Politics'. Cool.

Linguistics: speaking german and russian in 1969. The language of the Ancients in 5th race, ummm, can't think of any more..... And claiming that he speaks 23 languages!

I entertain the view that Daniel is a genius: Would someone have two/three Phd's and not be a genius?

That's one thing he's got over people. 'He's way smarter then they are!'

as to the languages, well many are similar, like german and polish (using generalities here) so if you speak one fluently, you can usually get the gist of another.
latin is a root to many languages, and i don't speak french but when i read it i can recognize the root words and get an idea.
so if danny speaks spanish fluently, then he also has a hands up on portugese and other spanish based languages. if he speaks russian(which he does) then he has a hands up on other slavic languages etc, etc.

Anthropology is the designated field archeaology is the speciality in the field. Egyptology is a sub speciality.

Linguistics. Yes, Skydiver!. When one studies the root languages, such as Latin for the romance languages, you are correct! Asgard's father was literate in Arabic and he could speak modern Hebrew (but with dificulity he never studied it) and Swahili. Hebrew and Arabic are varients of each other. Because he could limp along in Hebrew he could speak with Falasha Jews.
He could also speak/read the Dutch varient that the Boors used in South Africa and because of that he could read along in German. He tried to speak it but he said he couldn't clear his throat and speak at the same time...(yet he got along in Hebrew!)
