Hi, gang. I need help from anyone who just bought the Region 1 DVD gift box of Season 1. I've found a flaw on one of the dvds, and before I return the box to Amazon.com and deal with all that, I want to be sure that the flaw is only on my disc and not on everyone's. So, I need to ask anyone who just got the set if you could please check the DVD for Fire and Water. On my disc, just after the scene where they're closing up Daniel's apt and realize he's not dead, the next bit is a close up of a tape recorder playing the sounds of waves crashing. On my disc, the scene stutters for about 5 seconds. I'd appreciate it alot if I could be sure this isn't a production flaw.

Many thanks in advance.

might but if the dvd is dual sided then it might just be the laser adjusting for the 2nd side.

there is dual sided and dual level or something like that. one is just a laser readjustment and i think the other one you turn over. I think that is correct but not 100% sure.

there are some disks that you have to flip over manually, these are usually older DVDs, the compression has gotten better with newer ones i think.

Modern dual layer disks say something like "layer transition may trigger a slight pause" but i've never noticed it. I havent watched all the disks in the set yet as it only arrived yesterday, but if you tell me which chapter to jump to from the menu of that episode, i'll watch it quickly and see if i can spot anything...

Problems

I did not have the same problem as you, but did you have any sound problems. In the episode "The Nox" I could not hear Apophis speak. You have to turn the volume all the way up to hear his voice

I scanned The Nox but didn't watch it closely last week. Which scene, hex? I'll check it out.

On another board I heard from several people who had the same problem I did on "fire and water"; one person had access to 3 DVD players (I'm jealous), and had it happen on one of hte three. Others found it too.

like i said, tell me the scene to jump to in "F&W" and i'll check mine, otherwise i'm going through them rougly 1 ep a day and i'm still on the 2st disk, so it could take a while ;)

It's in the first post, but no problem, here it is again.

Right after they visit Daniel's apartment to close it up, and Sam says "Daniel's alive", they leave to go back to the SGC. The next scene starts with a close up of a reel-to-reel tape player with 'smoothing ocean sounds' that MacKenzie thinks will spark their memories. On my DVD (and others) the close-up of the tape player stutters for about 4 seconds, no sound.

Let me know what you find, and if you find another other flaws we should all know about.

Thanks

Shiloh,

The problem was that you could not hear apophis speak in any scene in the Nox episode.

But that was the only problem. I think I got a bad dvd so I return my and I just waiting for the replacement set.

what i'm asking for is the time to jump in to the DVD at, so i dont have to watch thru the whole thing to find that bit.. so look at the clock on your player and tell me the time index of the dodgy bit please...

Sorry, can't answer your ? as I have yet to buy a DVD player, BUT I understand that the first season DVD is from syndication tv, not Showtime. Is this true???

Mine stutters for just a bare second on Nems hands on Daniel's head, right before the cut to the tape player.

no idea? we would only get the syndicated version in TV over here in the UK...

The opening credits are from the syndication, not Showtime (so it's the clip montage) but otherwise it's the original as far as I can tell. Certainly I got the nude scene in COTG.

Problems with series1 box set anyone??

Has anyone had sound problems on the following episods of the DVD series 1 box set ??

1)The Nox :- you cannot hear apophis speaking all through the episode

2)Brief Candle :- you cannot hear the voices on the video sent through the stargate to Jack.

The following post by Hex_20 also voices the same problem

so is it a isolated incident or does everyone have a problem who has the set

Hi Lost Soul

Of course I had the same problems. I return the set to where i purchased it from (Dvdplanet.com) and the got a new box set. The new box set did the same thing. I tried the discs on another player ( a newer one than mine) and i didn't have that problem, in my case it was my player. So just wanted to give you a heads up.

Hex :alienooh:

I didn't have those problems but had a different one (on Fire and Water, the disc "stuttering" on one scene, happened to at least 3 different people on their disks, too), and like your problems seemed to be related to the player.

FYI, I sent e-mail to MGM and asked who we should contact at MGM to let them know of these production problems on the disks. I got the following:

MGM Home Entertainment Marketing
2500 Broadway St
Santa Monica, CA 90404

I sent a letter a few days ago to let them know about the problems. If you find the time, do the same. Obviously the manufacterer of the disks did a lousy job, and MGM needs to know.

i've heard of several people have sound problems w/ the DVD's (don't have them myself, don't have a player) -- so, i would assume that every set has something wrong w/ it -- since there are so many complaints --

so - yes - contact MGM - and the manufacturer i suppose - if you can find an address --

Are you North American or European? (Pal...Region 2 formate verses Region 1) don't know if that would make a difference in that seeing the UK got not only the first season but all 4 seasons released before us so were made at a different time)

I have the North American set. I don't have any problems. Only sometimes there's a short pause where commercials used to be.

I'd take 'em back personally, though you might want to use one of those DVD disk cleaners. My VCR went nuts once but it was solved with a cleaning tape. Hope you get it resolved.
