Is this fantasy? You couldn't classify it as anything else, its not your usual fairy tale, and it is quite adult in many of the jokes. It is very funny.

A big green, ugly, smelly ogre with a heart of gold named Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) just wants to be left alone. But in the land called Duloc, the heartless ruler, the midget Lord Farquaad (voiced by John Lithgow) has banished all the fairy tales from the land. They all end up in the swamp Shrek has made his home. With the help of his faithful steed, a Donkey (Eddie Murphy), who will do anything but shut up, he goes to the Lord. They are promised the swamp back if they complete a quest. They must rescue the beautiful, but tough Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) whom Lord Farquaad wishes to make his wife so he can become king of Duloc. She is guarded by a Dragon in a castle with a molten lava mote.

To tell you any more would spoil the story. There are a lot of great little pieces here. Find some kids and go and see it.

i CANT BELIEVE THERE ARE NO OTHER REPLIES TO THIS!!!!!

DID NOBODY SEE IT AT ALL?

I SAW IT!! :D
I thought it was really funny too.
:blpaw:

I think it's one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long while. In fact, I've watched it a couple of times since I got the DVD, and I notice new jokes every time.

The only problem I have is the crappy rendition of an excellent Leonard Cohen song. Apart from that, the film is without flaw.

I've just borrowed the video off my 7 year old cousin. I'm REALLY ashamed I never got around to seeing this film at the pictures!

So what is your favourite part?

I like the bit where he blows up the frog into a balloon, and makes a dog shaped balloon out of the snake.

My mum and my kids like the bit where he takes wax out of his ear to make a candle.

It's quite a disgusting film really!

Erm, I still ain't watched it yet  It's sitting on my bookself collecting dust  Very hard to get a minute these days :D

On the box it says "Hilarious, original and absolutely brilliant." - Sunday Times ;)

Actually I'm a little put off by the donkey.
Most people (especially kids) have said he's the funniest character.
I love Mike Myers (especially in the Austin Powers movies), but I've never been much of an Eddie Murphy fan.
The donkey just seems really loud and annoying on the clips I've seen.

Well, I guess I better watch the movie so I can write a follow up :D

The talking Donkey is annoying to start with, that's part of the story, but it becomes best friends with Shrek in the end.

I understand what you mean about Eddie Murphy, but I think he was well cast in this.

It isn't so annoying you have to turn it off, like Jar Jar Binks in 'Star Wars', or the annoying Tree Sloth in 'Ice Age'.

I must concur. As a life-long disliker of Eddie Murphy (ever since someone made me watch 'Raw', his godawful stand-up concert), I've got to say that the fine line between 'funny' and 'bloody annoying' isn't crossed at all during the movie.

where's this follow-up nic??!?!

Hmm, ok.
I watched Shrek this week and I thought it was good, but it didn't live up to all the hype IMHO.
I get a little preocupied in watching the animation than fully getting involved in the story.
The animation was brilliant though!
Plus the characters really did posses some of the manorisms of the actors.

I really like Mike Myers, but I much prefered Austin Powers 1 and 2. Probably cos they are pretty much adult and there is only so much "adult" material you can get away with in a film that's target market is kids.

Shrek Cast Back For Sequel

DreamWorks honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg told Chicago Sun-Times columnist Cindy Pearlman that Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy will all return to voice their characters in the sequel to last year's hit computer-animated film Shrek. "They're all back," Katzenberg told Pearlman. "It wasn't hard to convince them. They loved doing the first movie, and we were extremely generous with them financially, because they deserved it."

Katzenberg also revealed spoilers for Shrek 2's plot. "Shrek and Fiona return from their honeymoon, and as they're showing their home movies to friends, a herald arrives with an announcement that Fiona's mom and dad have heard that she has found true love and married her true love," he said. "And as proud and anxious parents, they're thrilled and invite her and her new husband to their kingdom of Far Far Away. When Shrek and Fiona arrive, the fun begins, because the parents had assumed that she had fallen in love with Prince Charming. So it's a little bit of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner meets Shrek." Shrek 2 is aiming at a May 2004 release.
