Who were they?

Hello all,
I've got a little something for you to think about. Remember the movie, where Daniel translates the writings and it says that Ra came from a dying race? Well, the series seemed to glaze over that with Teal'c's statement in Children of the Gods, where he says that the Goa'uld have been growing in number. But that's no problem, I can handle that. My question is: what nearly wiped them out? Or who?
If in fact it was another race that nearly wiped them out, then it seems quite unusual that the SGC has not tried to identified them. They could be very powerful allies, and with an all-out war looming between Earth and the Goa'uld, allies are something that they could use.
Thoughts, questions,comments, anyone?

Well, the 10,000 years ago part is interesting: since ha'tak and gates and ring-transport were all available then, as were sarcophaguses and staff-weapons and ribbon-devices.

How far have these really advanced people (Goa'uld) actually come in 10,000 years - about Squat!

Causes of being "a dying race" - could have been natural: a virus or infection that their assimilatory practices could not cure, since they were not inherently inventors/developers. And perhaps are still not.

Could be the precursor to the now uneasy Goa'uld - Asgard alliance (c.f. role of Klingons and Federation in ST:TOS and ST:TNG). Could have been the early Tollans, but I get the feeling they were just very quick learners, possibly on a tauri-sourced planet (statistically quite likely outcome).

Could be the early days of Nox technologies - before they became peaceful... many people are powerful and vicious before going peaceful with it (for class discussion later).

And there are people such as the Fenlings or gate-builders themselves, who were perhaps a bit pi$$ed that the Goa'uld were nicking their technologies for their own nefarious uses.

And that is all without the potential number of races who have simply died-out in the intervening time, or in fact finally lost the war against the Goa'uld who ended up victorious and becoming strong again, after Ra had taken the human host...

Nothing is said whether Ra's race is still dying in the modern time-frame (though it is implied).

Yeah, good point with the Nox... prehaps they nearly wiped out the Goa'uld, then became so disgusted with the idea that they nearly wiped out an entire race that they became pacifists.
And another thing...(sorry, been having all these ideas, and I have to write them down) I was always annoyed with the fact that the off-world Stargates had glyphs that were basically the same as the one(s) on Earth. They should have been different (I don't think you could see Orion from Chulak, it'd look completely different.) Well here's an idea: maybe, just maybe, the Ancients are from Earth! It's just an idea, but it'd fix a lot of plotholes, and produce new ideas. Why did they leave Earth?(or are they still here?) Were they human, or did they evolve from something else? (dinosaurs?) What do you think?
Thanks,
Raptor

Well, (ignoring spoiler since only series 2!), in Fifth Race Daniel does say that the Ancients appear to have been the gods of Rome, the "road" builders, and speakers of a variant of Latin etc. In Tokra (part 2) Sam explains to Jacob that the gates appear to have been designed to transport people with human-like physiology, and go to planets that generally support human-like life.

So two questions:

a) were the "gods" of Rome simply pre-existing super-technical alternative culture who were subsequently absent when Ra came a-calling, but came back to build Rome?

b) (typical conspiracy question): could the gate-builders be related to the people of Atlantis? They could be the gate-builders, either developing from an earth culture, spending a few millenia here, or perhaps dying here - lots of possible plots there me-thinks!! [I have not seen 2010 yet BTW!!]

your makeing my head spin :aliengray :alienooh:

Yeah!

Raptor and P'Teppic - you have too much time on your hands! LOL! Anyway, interesting opinions! I'll wait and see if your theories pan out... ;)

Yeah, maybe thats what they will explain in the movie....or the spin off......

I have a feeling too that in the upcomming second stargate movie it will be explained who the original gate builders where etc . fingers crossed!

Presumably, since we know they are the Ancients, and are no longer in the galaxy, and despite being able to develop stable wormhole-like structures between two moving points, that move during use, but were unable to develop control of time, you mean, we learn MORE about them, perhaps in relation to their original, i.e. previous, relationships to Earth, given the human-like physiology thing etc.

Theory: they "created" us as an experiment in species development, but were unable, for some reason, to hang around to see us grow up?

Theory: we just happen to resemble the physiology of the beings for whom the gate is designed - is this perhaps the prevalent species-type in the universe?

Theory: we ARE the Ancients, but somehow suffered a massive mental/technical degeneration and started back at the bottom, perhaps amongst a similar level primitive primate-like creature on the existing 3rd planet in this solar system.
[Could be as a result of some disease, weapon, self-choice? The Asgard could be simply assuming the Ancients have left, or maybe it is a deliberate cover-up, or a stop-gap to telling us the truth when we work it out for ourselves?]
