Do you think the series would have been impacted in any way if Jack was not a full colonel, but, say, a major? Leading a small team of specialists into hazardous situations is probably (in reality) not a job for a colonel. Probably a Captain or even a Major. A colonel would probably be an executive officer to General Hammond.

Rank

In reality, a Full Bird would not be pulling field missions, that true, but I'm sure the 'show' would have the impact with a lesser rank in Jack's place. One of the key pivito points in the show is the way Jack faces off with Hammond. A Major probably wouldn't have enough 'history' [certainly not inthe Spec Ops community] to give a 2 star that much guff and a MGen wouldn't 'dare' let an O-4 get away with even a quarter that O'Neill does.

You need the rank for the push and pull. A Major in this type of program is too far down the 'food chain' for the 'premier SGC team'. IMHO, that is.
;)

Captain, Major, Colonel, General?
Please could someone (anyone!) tell me what order these come in. As in lowest-to-highest sense. Having read this, I now haven't the faintest idea!

In order of precedence, lowest to highest (US forces):

2nd Lieutenant
1st Lieutenant
Captain
Major
Lieutenant Colonel
Colonel
Brigadier General
Major General
Lieutenant General
General (Four Stars)

Oh, thank-you Slater.
I do not get much of the military stuff on 'Stargate', so I just needed the US forces.
I say 'need'. I ask weird questions.
Not knowing the answers to half the stuff I ask actually wouldn't have a big impact on my life........

Hey Sci-fi16,
I found a handy book to have around when I'm writing is a book called "The Order Of Things." I can't recall the author because the book's at home and I'm at work. It's like a mini-dictonary of all sorts of life and science stuff. And it puts them in order first to last, lowest to highest, etc. I'll never be stuck for the right names for phobias either; the book lists a whole two pages of them!

This book helped me with my cravings to have things in order. :D

Oh, thanks Cynvision! :D I'll check that out, but I might need the author. I love the sound of the book though. Thanks!

Is it
The Order of Things : How Everything in the World Is Organized into Hierarchies, Structures & Pecking Orders -- by Barbara Ann Kipfer?
Or
The Order of Things : An Archaeology of the Human Sciences -- by Michel Foucault?
Or
The Order of Things -- by Norbert Schoerner?

The all look interesting.

ding! ding!

I knew the name was like "Kipler" because I was writing a fic, needed a name, looked at the book, and mutated "Kipfler" into "Kipler" for a character's name. And that's how I got Kipler Graham.

why is a major general below a lieutenant general, when major outranks lieutenant?

sorry about that, i am not very good at this military stuff, but i would like to learn...

The ranks of Brigadier General and Major General were created first, and then Lieutenant General several years later. Possibly because of that reason, i.e. Major General was already in existence.

...and because the military isn't always logical??

Well, when you can pay $75 for a hammer and over $5,000 for a toilet, why be logical?

Just in case anyone's interested, below is the USAF enlisted rank structure (lowest to highest):

Airman Basic
Airman
Airman First Class
Senior Airman
Staff Sergeant
Technical Sergeant
Master Sergeant
Senior Master Sergeant
Chief Master Sergeant

The rank of Sergeant (E-4) was phased out in the early 1990's, and Senior Airman occupied that grade. The top two grades enabled the USAF to phase out Warrant Officers, and I believe that the Air Force is the only US service to not use Warrants.
