Coverstones, the Iris and Abandoning of Earth by the Goa'uld

As a result of other threads, and watching series 2&3, I have wondered the following:

When a wormhole is established, incoming or outgoing, it creates a vortex. In "A Hundred Days" the gate is totally buried, yet a vortex is possible. Similarly, apart from what is probably an oversight, the iris is always open in the SGC when the gate is disengaged, but closed after the vortex. It would be much safer to leave it closed until absolutely positive it should be opened, unless in doing so it would be destroyed by the vortex.

Side question: isn't this because it is the event horizon, so there is no point trying to keep the iris a few microns away from it!?

Anyway, if the vortex wipes out anything in its path, how would a simple coverstone keep Ra out? Similarly, even if the gate was buried, he could have returned in his hatak (side question: should hatak be apostrophed?).

So, my discussion point for tonight: after stripping the earth of its most valuable asset, human beings for populating the galaxy as hosts, slaves etc., did Ra and the System Lords simply forget about the planet as a technologically worthless, when the religion aspect of the overlordship wore off?

I think it's spelled Ha'tak or Hak'tak. I watch everything in closed captioning and I've seen it both ways. I think Ra didn't think we were a big enough threat and he already had all the humans he needed, but he might also have left because we killed the Anubis of the time. Or the other goa'ulds didn't know Ra went to earth and him and Ra were killed. After a while the goa'ulds assumed he was dead and a new one stepped forward. If you read one of my threads, I said I think the iris is close enough so it won't desinagrate.

having watched several more episodes clearly, I think my original premise was wrong about the vortex destroying the iris... but it does seem to be slightly inconsistent with the vortex cavity in "An Hundred Days" which was as a result of being buried.

Actually, the official SG-1 website says that Ra's ship was a Cheops Class ship. The ones with the bases underneath them (The Serpent's Lair, for example) are Ha'tak class.
And as for the Goa'uld leaving Earth...well, I daresay they had lots of humans offworld, and a certain bunch of little grey dudes *may* have had something to do with it...

Pesonally I wouln't mind having a Tel'tak. Have you heard of them? I know the combinations to activate the rings. Doesn't look too hard to fly either. It would be sweet if I also had a Ha'tak and an asguard ship like Biliskner. The O'neill was beautiful and sounded neat!

What would they know - they only make the stuff...

Inevitably things may have changed, or been named after a pre-existing name was given, so I will have to check my references...
