potential spoilers ----

well - yeah - that's what happened (read neo's post above) -- kinda weird -- but okay -- however - not much action -- just a bunch of paranoid crewmen --

i just want to know -- when are they gonna start trusting the transporter?? they used it for Archer in the 1st ep -- why not use it more? true - it seems to only be able to handle one person or object at a time, but also is a lot faster than those little space pods -- i know they're not supposed to have all the same ameneties that we're used to from the other Treks, but they could trust some of the technology a little more ---

again -- potential spoilers ahead!

So, what do you give it out of ten?

Is it better than 'Fight or Flight', but worse than 'Broken Bow'?

why do you always ask the hard questions, Dave??

it would fall somewhere btwn the two - Hoshi wasn't whining, which was a plus, and there was this new chic (guess she was new, don't remember seeing her before), she's an entymologist - yep, she studies bugs, tho, i'm not really sure why she was sent on the away mission - 'cept to tell everyone that the fireflies (how odd that there are fire flies on some distant planet) have gone away - just before the wind starts

this ep also has the first mention of the term "M-Class Planet" - only T'Pol uses whatever the word is - can't remember it off the top of my head - and she said it about 3 times --

the scenes in the caves (where the 'rock people' live) are pretty good - (yeah, there were good things - sometimes the bad stuff just sticks better) -- they're all yelling at each other and accusing T'Pol of being a traitor -- all b/c of some virus carried in the pollen, down from the mtns by the wind --

so - this one would fall closer to "Broken Bow" than "Fight or Flight" -- it really wasn't all that bad -- (what got me was that about 1/2 way through it, i remembered that i wanted to tape the TNG ep that was on at the same time - and i forgot! "The Naked Now" was on yesterday -- and i was gonna tape it and completely forgot to set the other VCR - so i was kicking myself for that -- and kinda lost focus on Enterprise)

It was a good "locked room" story - where you have the various crewpeople trapped and slowing going nuts. Brought out some of the anti-vulcan feelings the humans have and set up some conflicts between T'Pol and the rest of the crew, how they don't really trust her.

Good question, HighlanderII, about the transporter. If they could transport one crewman up, why not the rest one at a time? That part didn't make much sense. But who cares. It was fun.

I thought this episode was pretty good. The hallucinogen caused them to show what they were actually feeling and their fears.

The woman enthomologist was chosed because they where studying the planet. She was probably suppose to study the bug life since that is what and enthomologist does. I image the other crewman was also some type of scientist studying a specific area of the planet.

As to not using the transporter, remember the first time it was used for human life was when ARcher was transported. They are not completely sure that it will always work, and they did almost lose the ensign when they transported him up. It takes time to build trust in any technology, especially one that scrambles your molecules.

Hiroshi did a good job in her part. We saw her struggling with her fears last time and now she seems to be getting a bit of a handle on them.

Remember we are still seeing the characters develop and that takes time.

i understand it takes time to learn to trust the new technology - hell, i still don't trust most computers - they like to lose stuff - but, i think they should 'test' the transporter a couple times in 'non-urgent' situations - ie: they're hanging out over a planet they just visited and it's a quiet planet and there's nothing wrong w/ it, so they play around w/ the transporter, just to see how it works - and see what really happens when they use it -- then they get a blip on their screen of an incoming vessel or something -- ST is good for starting the eps w/ something calm and uneventful, then BANG! something happens and the plot shifts --

They know the transporter works on nonbiological matter fine.

It was the rating for living beings that was the question. So if they sit there and test it just who or what are they going to test it on.

"Okay people, we need to test this transporter. So if I can have just a couple of volunteers? Know don't worry there is only a slight chance it will mess up your molecules. So who is it going to be?"

Gotta say it was alot better than Fight or flight... but not as good as broken bow...

Like seeing tpol getting worker up... I thougth Archer would have stayed down on the planet though.... Bit like what kirk always used to do...

And why ow why did the dog go with them ?????????

I wondered that one myself. After all if there is anything dangerous down there I wouldn't want to have to worry about the dog.

that was not my main concern...

I was more worried about what Starfleet would have to say

True, but then it seems strange that Starfleet let him take the dog with him on the ship.

Does not look like starfleet even had a choice

Seems to me T'Pol is getting set for a big I told you so for Archer, he seems to be a little too carefree with his attitude "we did come out here to tip toe around", he's going to get burned in a episode soon.

why? Data had a cat -- that we never saw again after "Generations" --

i do agree that taking the dog on the away mission was a bit weird - but since there is not, currently, a 'prime directive' - i guess they aren't 'officially' violating anything -

tho - i'd be a bit careful if we found 'life' on a planet - who knows how they would react to the dog, or the dog to them --

I've just seen it... OK but I was expecting more.

I think she says "Menshara Class" but then I thought 'Engine' was 'Ensign' last week.

At the beginning was that 'Termite soup' Hoshi was eating? Yum! Yum! Termites from Arakis Prime -- so no deserts and sand there yet (otherwise known as Dune.)

Just to add, doesn't anyone else think it rather strange to have two 'horror' or 'spooky' stories back to back as episodes, so early in the new series.

It does seem to be Mr. Braga's favourite genre, but he didn't even screenplay this one. Historically, they are not the most common ST stories, but then they say that they want it to be different to previous shows. But more than that, I don't think the stories were that original, and there has been a succession of 'Alien' like films in recent years, there is little scope for anything new. It does show the crew as being vulnerable, and alone in space, meeting the unknown. Maybe that is the point they are trying to ram home to us.

well - see, now they've done the 'crew goes nuts/psycho' ep - it's time for 'the crew groes old', 'the crew loses all it's inhibitions', and 'the crew loses it's memory' -- not to mention, that one of the crew members should be impregnated by an alien being, and then one or more must be kidnapped, and they have to encounter some big bad computer that runs the planet - and there HAS to be the 'crew gets sent back/forward in time' ep - can't forget that one --

(tho, "Time's Arrow" is one of my fave TNG eps!)

any other 'stereotypical' eps that must be done??? did i miss anything??

oh - a crew member must die and be brought back to life -- that always happens ---
